CHARLESTON – Charleston Southern opened their Big South schedule on Thursday afternoon against Radford and defeated them by a 7-0 final score. The win moves to 8-5 overall on the year and 8-1 at home.
The Buccaneers got off to a great start in doubles play, winning on all three courts by a 6-1 final score.
Noa Boyd and
Jessica Braun won in the topflight 6-1 first, followed by the doubles point clinch on court #3 by
Marina Skegro and
Kassandra Di Staulo. The last one to conclude, which was minutes after the other two, was
Khyanna Singh and
Amila Jusufbegovic on court #2.
In singles, the team got off to just as quick of a start, winning the first set on four of the courts 6-1. Boyd had hers be the first to finish with her winning 6-1, 6-0 on court #3 followed by Braun in the topflight by a 6-1, 6-2 final.
Jusufbegovic clinched the team's victory with her result on court #2 which was 6-1, 6-4. Singh also cruised in her win claiming position #5 for the Bucs at 6-4, 6-2.
The other two matches each went to a third set but was only played to ten points as the match had already been decided.
Brenda Yoris claimed hers 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (8) on court #6 while Skegro won 6-7 (5), 6-0, 1-0 (4) to cap off the day's action at court #4.
Charleston Southern returns to the courts this Sunday for a home match against UNC Asheville. The first serve is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Gary Clark Banks Sr. Tennis Center. The Buccaneers fell to the Bulldogs last regular season, but avenged their loss in the Big South Championship to claim the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season.
