CHARLESTON – UNC Asheville defeated Charleston Southern by a final score of 4-3 on Sunday to remain unbeaten in Big South play and hand the Bucs their first conference loss of the year.
The Bulldogs claimed the doubles point to start the day. The Bucs' combo of
Kassandra Di Staulo and
Marina Skegro won on court #3 by a final score of 6-2 which was the first to conclude. After that, Asheville won on court #2 at 6-3, then got the topflight in a tiebreaker to clinch the point. Linge Steenkamp and Ari Siegel won it 7-6 (6).
In singles, Asheville bumped their lead up to 3-0 quickly, taking the wins on courts #1 and #5 by straight sets.
Charleston Southern started to cut into their deficit beginning with
Amila Jusufbegovic's victory on court #2. She also won in straight sets with the final score at 6-4, 6-2. Her singles victory marked the 32
nd of her career, which now ties her for the 15
th-most in program history. The remaining three matches all went to a third set.
Skegro pulled the Bucs closer at 3-2 after winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 on court #4. UNC Asheville clinched the overall match win shortly after with the result on court #3. Alexia Nyborg prevailed 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 for their fourth point of the afternoon.
The day ended on Di Staulo's result on court #6 with each of her first two sets going to a tiebreak with the third set being shorted to a third set tiebreaker due to the overall result already being decided. She dropped the first set 6-7 (9) but took the two that followed at 7-6 (3), 1-0 (3).
Charleston Southern will now have a long layoff until their next match. Their next two matches are each on the road with them taking on Presbyterian (4/3) and Gardner-Webb (4/9). The Bucs will return home for a pair of matches to close out the season against College of Charleston (4/11) and Longwood (4/13).
