Bucs Claim Series with Doubleheader Sweep of Blue Hose

CLINTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern softball team overcame a series-opening loss by taking both games of the doubleheader against the Presbyterian Blue Hose on Saturday, winning 6-3 in the first game and 4-1 in the final game.

Game One
After Presbyterian (14-25, 4-4 in conference) got out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Bucs (17-18, 4-4 in conference) responded with two in the third inning. Carsten Sandvig tied the game with an RBI single that scored BriAnna Brooks. Then, after Sandvig stole second base, Gracie Prince lined a double in center field to make it 2-1.

The Bucs extended their lead to 5-1 in the sixth inning, as Weslin Jones led the inning with a singled, and Lacy Johnson walked. After Kendal Cook bunted them over, Brooks singled to center field, and Madelyne Lee hit a sacrifice fly. Sandvig made it 5-1 with an RBI single.

Back came the Blue Hose, as a two-run home run made it a 5-3 game, but the Bucs added one more insurance run in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI single from Harper Schoeneweis

Nealy Lamb improved her record to 9-6 on the season. She allowed three runs (one earned) and struck out seven batters. Sandvig, Prince, Charlee Yourman and Brooks each had two hits, as the Bucs were one hit away from tying their season high of 12 hits.

Game Two
The Bucs (18-18, 5-4 in conference) were in control from the beginning, scoring two in the second and two in the fourth inning and tied their season high of 12 hits. Lacy Johnson provided the game's first run with an RBI double. She came around to score on an RBI single by BriAnna Brooks

In the fourth inning, Johnson provided another run with a sacrifice fly that scored Harper Schoeneweis, and Madelyne Lee scored Weslin Jones with an RBI single.

In the circle, Annah Junge was excellent, picking up her sixth win of the season with 7.0 innings of one-run ball. The Blue Hose (14-26, 4-5 in conference) picked up their lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI groundout. Junge allowed five hits, one walk and struck out six batters.

Weslin Jones was 3 for 4 with two runs scored, and Johnson, Kendal Cook and Harper Schoeneweis each had two hits.

On Deck
Charleston Southern wraps up their 10-straight games away from home with a trip to Conway, S.C. on Wednesday to battle it out with the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. The Bucs won the lone game at CSU Softball Field last year by a 2-1 score, as Raleigh Lewis hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 3 PM and 5 PM. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
