CHARLESTON – Charleston Southern football completed their second scrimmage of fall camp on Tuesday night under the lights of Buccaneer Field running over 85 plays during the time showcasing their continued growth over the past 20 days.
"Overall, it was great 'wefense' out here with a lot of great comradery and great competition, and now, we turn the page and get ready to go play the season," said Head Coach
Gabe Giardina following the scrimmage. "We are excited, and by far, this has been the best camp I have ever been a part of."
The team got started at 6:30 p.m. and after running situational special team drills for kickoffs and punts, the team's top options on the offensive and defensive ends of the ball took the field.
The Buccaneer defensive line continued to prove they will boast one of the top units in the country at the position. The experience of
Devonte Turner and Josh Hill and the rest of the "Dirty Blue" defense created multiple forced fumbles, sacks and tackles for loss in the first half of the evening.
After settling in, the offense started to get into their rhythm and drive down the field with
Tyson Greenwade,
Brandon Musch and
Roderick Hawkins each breaking out big runs on possessions and scoring touchdowns as well.
The wide receivers continued to showcase the strides the group has made under Assistant Coach
Vince Giardina.
Noah Jennings,
Jamil Bishop and
Chris Rhone highlighted the performances from the group with each making big plays during the scrimmage.
One of the plays of the night was made near the end of the scrimmage as
David Portu, a transfer defensive lineman, was able to catch a batted ball at the line of scrimmage for the lone interception of the night.
Charleston Southern will open their 2024 season at home on Saturday, August 31 at 6:00 p.m. against their crosstown rival in The Citadel. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ and feature the first official matchup between the two programs in the rivalry installment of the "Lowcountry Boil Bowl."
