Richmond Defends Home Field Defeating Charleston Southern 38-0

RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond notched their first win of the season in a complete performance over Charleston Southern in front of the Spiders' packed home crowd for Family Weekend on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 38-0.

After just one first down combined through the first five possessions between the two squads, the Spiders put a pair of drives together to get on the board. The back-to-back touchdown drives by them were followed by a pick six thrown by CSU to quickly find themselves with a 21-0 lead. The score was carried into the halftime break as well as neither team for the remainder of the first.

One of the storylines of the game came in the first half with transfer quarterback Rob McCoy Jr going down with an injury. Following this, Zolten Osborne took over the reigns on the next possession for his first action of the season and since a season-ending injury during the 2023 season.

Richmond won the turnover battle 3-0 as they had two interceptions and a fumble recovery. The Spiders outgained the Buccaneers in total yards by a 370-131 edge.

Autavius Ison led the team in rushing with 49 yards on 13 carries including a long of 16. Osborne finished the game going 10-19 passing with 81 yards through the air. Steve Zayachowsky led the team in tackles for the second time this season as he had eight on the day. Chandler Perry had a great day behind the chains as he had a pair of TFLs.

Gilbert Brown had another solid day averaging just over 50 yards per punt. Coming into the day, he ranked 8th nationally in the stat. He had three punts go for over 50 including a career-best of 67 among the eight he booted.

Charleston Southern now heads into their bye week for the 2024 season and will return to action with the conference opener. They will travel to Tennessee and face off with Tennessee State on Saturday, September 28 inside Nissan Stadium with a kickoff scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
