CHARLESTON – Friday night, Charleston Southern hosted the Winthrop Eagles to begin another weekend of Big South volleyball. Winthrop would sweep the VolleyBucs: 25-20, 25-20, 25-18.
Beginning the evening, Charleston Southern looked happy to be back home, holding a narrow 15–14 lead heading into the match's first media timeout. However, an 8–3 run by Winthrop gave Heather Gearhart's Eagles a 22–18 advantage they would never surrender, taking the first set 25–20.
Set two started more favorably for the visiting Eagles, who built a comfortable 17–10 lead midway through the frame. A pair of three-point runs kept CSU in contention, but the Winthrop duo of Rachel McCollum and Giselle Little combined for three of the team's final five points to secure a 2–0 set lead.
Buccaneer graduate transfer Oliwia Durka tallied 4 of her 9 kills in what would be the match's final set, but for every CSU point, the Eagles seemed to have multiple answers. A final assist from Rachel McCollum sealed the victory for Winthrop — their fourth win of the still subjectively-young Big South volleyball season.
