Bucs Almost Complete 19-Point Comeback Sunday Afternoon at Furman

CHARLESTON – Sunday afternoon, Charleston Southern traveled to Greenville, South Carolina for an afternoon match-up with the Furman Paladins. Furman took the victory, 84-76.

Down 24-20 with roughly five minutes remaining in Sunday's first-half, CSU looked for an offensive spark to take their first lead of the contest. That spark would be a 7-1 run by graduate student Jesse Hafemeister. A made Hafemeister three-pointer would put the Bucs ahead 27-25, forcing the Paladins to call a time-out. A competitive but overall low scoring first-half would result in a 35-34 score favoring CSU heading into the halftime locker room.

Early in the second-half, an A'lahn Sumler layup would give Charleston Southern a 42-41 lead. Unfortunately for the visiting Bucs, they would only score four points in the following eight minutes. Finding themselves down by 19 points (65-46), a trio of Nate Brafford free-throws would start an impressive comeback. An 8-point run by true freshman, Jacob Taylor would shrink the gap to eleven (68-57). Two minutes later, a pair of A'lahn Sumler three-pointers would tie the contest at 69-69. The squads would trade minor leads for the next handful of possessions, but the Buccaneers only making one field goal in the final three minutes of the contest would dim their chances of an early Christmas gift-victory. Furman would win on their home floor, 84-76.

Notables:

  • A'lahn Sumler would lead all scorers with 26 points – his second highest scoring performance of the season.

  • Luke Williams would lead all players in assists as he dished out 7 dimes in the contest.

  • Both Reis Jones and Lase Olalere would record 3 blocks each – Olalere tying his career-high in the category.

  • Jacob Taylor would shoot an impressive 71% (5-7) from the field, scoring 12 points in just 18 minutes of play.
