Offense Shows Out in 15-14 Victory Over Chicago on Saturday as Bucs Move to 2-0

CHARLESTON – The Buccaneers moved to 2-0 on the 2025 season on Saturday with a 15-14 victory over Chicago. This marks back-to-back years that the team has started the spring season 2-0 which is the first time since the 2014 and 2015 seasons that has happened.

The Flames got on the board first with a two-run home run in the top of the first and a double play in the second that scored a runner from third. This put them ahead 3-0 in the early going.

However, after this, it was all Charleston Southern as they went on to score 11 unanswered between the next two frames. In the second, the Bucs scratched across four runs in a wide variety of ways including an RBI single, a hit by pitch, a fielder's choice and a double steal. In the third, they tallied seven with Lew Rice getting the action rolling with a bunt single when the bases were loaded. The runners each moved up a bag on a wild pitch, and later scored runs off a walk and a hit by pitch. AJ Martin cleared the bags on a double to the outfield wall to bring the score to 11-3.

Chicago responded with three runs in the next two innings including a pair of solo home runs in the top of the 4th inning. The Bucs responded with a pair of home runs themselves in the bottom of the 5th as Kaden Smith and Martin each recorded their firsts in their Buccaneer careers.

Charleston Southern's Anthony Sanguedolce belted a ball through the right side that scored the team's 15 run of the day in the 6th. Meanwhile, the Flames had a three-run home run in the 6th as well as a grand slam when they were down to their final out of the day to keep the game close and bring the final score to 15-14.

The Buccaneers used six pitchers during the game with Joel Rodriguez taking the start throwing the first two innings. Camden Chalfant earned the win in his CSU debut, tossing the next three innings to qualify for the decision. Kyle Lewis was next out of the bullpen with Tyler Henshaw after him who did not allow any Flame to score and continue his tremendous weekend on the mound with today featuring 1.1 frames of work. Chris Foster and Ryan DuSang closed out the game for the Bucs.

Everyone in the Bucs' lineup successfully reached base at least once during the game. Martin and Nathan Martinez tied for the team lead in hits with three while Aidan McAskie and Lew Rice each had two. Martin and Sanguedolce each had three RBIs in the contest as well. Rounding out the team's stellar day at the plate included Sanguedolce, Smith, Lucas Pringle, Chandler Tuupo and Blake Edgmon who each had either a hit or drew a hit by pitch.

Charleston Southern will look to close out the weekend with a victory over Chicago on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for 1:00 p.m. but was pushed back following Saturday's contest due to anticipated weather moving into the area.
