CHARLESTON – Charleston Southern defeated The Citadel on Wednesday night by a 13-3 final score. The Buccaneers used a
Gavin Bogdanchik solo home run in the top of the eighth to push them into run rule territory and end the game an inning early over the crosstown foe.
Charleston Southern moves to 12-3 on the season becoming the second time in the team's D1 era that they have reached that record with the other year coming in 1987. The team in 1987 got to 13-3 before getting tagged with their fourth loss of the season.
In the first, Charleston Southern continued their string of games with having early offense pave the way for the rest of the game, scoring two in the opening frame. With two outs on the board, the Bucs loaded the bases with
Aidan McAskie,
AJ Martin and
Chandler Tuupo.
Nathan Martinez sent a single up the middle to bring Martin and Tuupo in, giving them an early 2-0 advantage. The Citadel was able to get one back with an error on a groundball to the shortstop.
The Buccaneers put up a three-spot in the second, bumping the lead to 5-1.
Kain Collins and
Blake Edgmon had back-to-back singles to start the frame.
Kaden Smith had a double to left field to score two and a
Chandler Tuupo double to right scored Smith.
In the fourth, each team tallied another two runs. Charleston Southern scored theirs off RBI swats by Martin and single by McAskie. In the bottom half of the frame, Citadel scratched their pair across on a fielding error pulling the score to 7-3.
In the sixth, Charleston Southern busted the game open, tallying five across. The party started with an RBI walk by McAskie followed by a two RBI double from Martinez to center. Later in the inning, Collins also had an RBI walk and Edgmon had an fielders choice to score another, putting CSU up 12-3. Charleston Southern scored their final one of the day off a
Gavin Bogdanchik home run to left field for his second of the year, placing the score at 13-3.
Brett Gastman started the game and tossed the first 2.0 allowing one unearned run to score, giving up just one hit.
Kyle Lewis had the next 3.0 innings and struck out six batters while allowing one earned run.
Christian Krause threw a shutout for his 2.0 and
Parks Ledwell had the final inning.
As a team, the Bucs collected 17 hits with Smith and Martin leading the squad with three while Martinez and Edgmon had two apiece. Martinez led the team with four RBIs while Smith and McAskie each had two on the day.
The Bucs will be back in action this weekend for their conference opener at High Point. The Friday game is slated for 6:00 p.m. start with each game to be available and streamed live on ESPN+.
