CHARLESTON – College of Charleston defeated Charleston Southern by a 14-9 final score on Tuesday evening at Patriots Point in a back-and-forth contest.
Charleston Southern took an early lead in the second off a
Gavin Bogdanchik two-run home run and a bases loaded groundout by
Kaden Smith. After this inning, the Bucs led 3-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars were able to get their offense going, scoring five runs in the frame, to get their first lead of the contest at 5-3.
The Buccaneer offense continued to battle and stay in the contest as Bogdanchik had a double to right field to score
Aidan McAskie in the fifth and bring them within one. In the sixth, Charleston Southern was able to put up four runs and surge ahead 8-5. Martinez had an RBI single and Bogdanchik as well. During the play, there was a throwing error by the second baseman, allowing another run to score. They got their final one across via a double steal that brought
Nathan Martinez home.
The lead was short lived as the Cougars put up a nine spot in the bottom half of the inning, regaining the lead and holding it for the rest of the night.
In the top of the ninth,
Brock Kuehler came in as a pinch hitter and got his first hit of the season with it being a home run over the fence in left field making the final score 14-9.
Charleston Southern used seven pitchers during the contest.
Brad Grindlinger received the start for his collegiate debut and threw a scoreless first allowing just one walk. Others to have scoreless outings included
Joel Rodriguez,
Hayden Henry,
Nick Timpanelli and
Camden Chalfant.
At the plate, Martinez led the team with four hits while Bogdanchik added three and Reising had two. Bogdanchik had the team-high in RBIs with four on the night.
The Buccaneers return to action this weekend with a road weekend series at Radford. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Highlanders' home facility.
