SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Charleston Southern softball team dropped both games of their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, as the USC Upstate Spartans completed the three-game sweep with 13-5 and 8-3 wins.
In game one, the Buccaneers (16-24, 5-7 in conference) fell behind early in the game, as the Spartans (32-11, 7-5 in conference) jumped out to a 4-0 lead; however, Charleston Southern responded with four runs in the top of the third inning. Two runs scored on a fielding error by the catcher to make it 4-2, and a sacrifice fly by
Emma Villaescusa tied the game at four.
The Spartans responded quickly with four runs in the bottom of the third inning, and with a 10-5 lead entering the sixth inning, they scored three runs and took home the win.
The Buccaneers allowed 17 hits to the Spartans, and
Kinsey Clopton suffered the defeat to fall to 6-7.
In game two, the Buccaneers got on the board first with a sacrifice fly by
Charlee Yourman in the top of the first inning, but the Spartans responded with four runs in the bottom of the first and one in the bottom of the second inning. The Buccaneers cut the deficit to two, as Yourman and
Jordyn Dimond both had RBI singles in the fourth inning to make it 5-3.
Riley Lauffer pitched 6.0 innings for Charleston Southern allowing eight runs (7 ER) on 13 hits.
The Buccaneers are back at home on Tuesday, as they host crosstown rival The College of Charleston at CSU Softball Field. First pitch is at 5:05 PM and will be streamed on ESPN+.
