CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Big South announced their winners for the annual awards on Wednesday afternoon with Charleston Southern earning the most in the league. This helps supplement the undefeated Big South slate and Regular Season Championship that the Bucs claimed earlier this month. In total, there were six different Buccaneers selected for awards with them taking 11 honors.
Anca Dumitrescu claimed her third Big South Coach of the Year award this season after leading the Bucs to a regular season record of 15-4 which included an 11-match winning streak to end the regular season. Additionally, they had a perfect 5-0 mark against league opponents, outscoring their Big South opponents 27-4 across those matches. This is the third Regular Season Championship the team has gone on to win during her seven years.
Emmie Moore became the first player in league history to claim Big South Player and Newcomer of the Year in the same season. Additionally, Moore is the first Player of the Year at CSU since Coach Dumitrescu arrived in the fall of 2018. She impressed in singles play with her overall record of 9-2 and 4-0 in Big South play, spending the majority of the season in the topflight. In each of her conference matches, she won by straight sets, and all but one of her victories on the season she needed more than two sets to win. In doubles, she paired with
Brenda Yoris on the #3 court and paired together for seven wins. Additionally, she was selected for First-Team All-Conference for singles play.
Marina Skegro joined Moore on the First-Team All-Conference for singles. She finished the regular season at 10-4 and 3-1 in league play, spending most of the season in the #2 flight. Additionally, the doubles pairing of Skegro and
Kassandra Di Staulo were selected Second-Team All-Conference. They played on the #2 court for most of the year and compiled a record of 8-7 overall to go with a 3-2 mark against league opponents. Also, Skegro was the Charleston Southern representative on the All-Academic Team. She currently holds a GPA of 3.8 as she is pursing her degree in computer science.
Noa Boyd and
Amila Jusufbegovic were selected to the All-Conference First-Team for doubles, being the league's top vote getters in the category. They served as the Bucs' top duo for doubles action and had a record of 9-8 on the year and 4-1 against Big South opponents.
Additionally, they were each selected to the All-Conference Second-Team for singles. They both went an unblemished 4-0 against Big South opponents during the year with Boyd playing on court #3 and Jusufbegovic on court #4. Overall, Boyd held a record of 9-4 while Jusufbegovic was 11-3. With Boyd's pair of honors this year she becomes the first in school history and fifth in league history to be a four-time All-Conference honoree for both singles and doubles.
Charleston Southern has their next match on Friday at 9:00 a.m. with the Bucs scheduled to take part in the Big South Championships in Lexington, S.C.. They will first face #4 Presbyterian in the semifinals of the event. The finals for the championship will be held on Saturday at noon which the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
