CHARLESTON – Charleston Southern catcher
Lucas Pringle was named to the Buster Posey Award Midseason Watch List, the Wichita Sports Commission announced last week. He is the first catcher in program history to be named to the watch list since its inception a quarter of a century ago.
Pringle is one of 56 Division I catchers to earn a spot on the watch list, including one of just two from the Big South Conference. The award has been presented annually to the nation's most outstanding catcher since 2000; it was previously known as the Johnny Bench Award until renaming it after the famous Florida State and San Francisco Giants catcher, Buster Posey, in 2019.
Currently this season, he is batting .299 to go with an on base percentage of .437 and slugging of .477. He has played in 37 games and started in 30 of them. He scored 35 runs and batted in 26 while smashing seven doubles and four home runs. Additionally, he has drawn 16 walks and 11 hit by pitches. Behind the dish, he has thrown out nine runners, holds a .992 fielding percentage and has only had two passed balls.
Later this season, the semifinalists for the award will be announced on Monday, May 19 with the three finalists to be announced on Thursday, June 5. They will be selected at the Buster Posey Award Ceremony at INTRUST Bank Arena in Wichita, Kansas Thursday, June 26.
The Buccaneers are back in action this Tuesday, April 29 as they will take on South Carolina with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Founders Park in Columbia, S.C. The game will be available to be watched live on SECN+.
