CHARLESTON – College of Charleston took the second of the two-game series of the 2025 season over Charleston Southern on Tuesday night at Nielsen Field. The Cougars prevailed behind five early runs between the first two innings with the final score ending at 6-4.
Each team was able to get their offense going early, scoring three spots during it. The Cougars got their first across the plate on a sacrifice fly and then had a two RBI double later in the inning for the others.
In the Bucs' half of the inning,
Kain Collins had a leadoff single and moved to second base when
Chandler Tuupo got hit on a 3-1 pitch. After this,
Kaden Smith stepped to the plate and belted a ball over the fence in left field to tie the game.
The College of Charleston was able to piece together more runs to regain the lead in the top of the second with a two RBI double. The pitching staffs on both sides were able to put up zeros for the next 4.5 innings. The Cougars bumped their lead to 6-3 with an RBI groundout in the top of the seventh.
In the eighth, Charleston Southern were able to get a run closer with
AJ Martin having an RBI single to right field to score
Nathan Martinez.
Brett Gastman had the start and tossed the first inning.
Camden Chalfant was the first out of the bullpen throwing the next 4.0 allowing a pair of earned runs and striking out seven.
Kyle Lewis was the next to throw and had 2.2 frames of work allowing one run to score and struck out four batters.
Tyler Henshaw entered in the eighth and finished off the day with the final 1.1 of scoreless work.
At the plate, Collins led the team with two hits while six others added one in the contest. Smith led the squad with three RBIs and Martin added one.
Charleston Southern will be back in action for a weekend series against Mercer. They will face the Bears in Macon on Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. and return to Charleston for the series finale to be played at Nielsen Field @ CSU Ballpark on Sunday at 3 p.m.
