Smith Ties NCAA Single-Game Doubles Record with Five in Regular Season Finale to Defeat Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Kaden Smith finished the regular season finale on Saturday with five doubles to tie the NCAA D1 record for the most by an individual in a single game. The Buccaneers prevailed in the contest by a 14-4 final score, run ruling the Runnin' Bulldogs on their senior day. Additionally, Smith becomes just the 16th Buccaneer to collect five or more hits in a single game.
 
Charleston Southern immediately got out to a hot start, scoring the first ten runs of the game. Kaden Smith and AJ Martin each had RBI doubles while Nathan Martinez had a sacrifice fly for third run of the first inning. In the second, the Bucs' offense exploded for five in the frame. Kaden Smith had a two RBI double to left center followed by a Chandler Tuupo single through the left side and Aidan McAskie having a two RBI double of his own but to right center. Tuupo had a sacrifice flyout to the centerfielder in the third to score Kain Collins and Lew Rice tripled in the fourth to score Martinez and have the scoreline at 10-0.
 
The two teams went tick-for-tac for the remainer of the game with each tallying four runs with Gardner-Webb scoring all of theirs off home runs.
 
For Charleston Southern, they tallied another in the fifth off a McAskie double to score Smith. In the eighth, they scored their final three of the day to push the score back into run rule territory. Tuupo had an RBI groundout, Martin had an RBI single and McAskie had a single and followed an error an the outfield, allowed Martin to score all the way from first for the squad's 14th run of the afternoon.
 
On the mound, the Buccaneers used just two pitchers. Tait Robertson threw 7.0 frames of work for the longest of his career. He allowed seven walks, three earned runs and did not allow a walk. Tyler Henshaw entered the game for the eighth inning and had a line of 1.0 inning pitched, one hit allowed and one run allowed.
 
Smith led the team with his record day of five hits and five doubles and went 6-6 on his plate appearances as he also drew a walk. McAskie and Martin each had tremendous days as well with their four and three hit performances. Smith, Tuupo and McAskie each drove in three runs while Martin had two. Smith and Collins both scored four times while Martin did three. As a team they finished with 16 hits and 10 walks drawn with Lucas Pringle contributing four on the day.
 
The result ends the standout regular season for Charleston Southern. They will now await for Sunday morning as the conference will officially announce the seedings for the Big South Championships at 10:30 a.m. The Tournament will begin on Wednesday, May 21 with the first round games with the champion to be crowned on Saturday, May 24.
