CHARLESTON – Dr. Jose Gomez announced on Wednesday afternoon that following the end of the 2026 season, he will be stepping down from his position as Head Coach for Women's Soccer at Charleston Southern and retiring from coaching. He will be transitioning into a different role in the athletic department at CSU and begin serving as the Associate A.D. for Advancement and Revenue Generation later this year.

"For twenty-two years, coaching gave me and my family more than we could have imagined," shared Head Coach Dr. Jose Gomez. "The experiences along the way are truly a blessing that I was able to share with so many players and teams. While I look forward to watching CSU soccer thrive, I am ready to continue the ongoing development of our athletic programs in a new capacity. Go Bucs!"

Gomez arrived at Charleston Southern in December of 2019 to serve as the third-ever Head Coach for Women's Soccer at the school. Through his seven years leading the Buccaneers he has compiled 37 wins and has had 18 All-Conference honorees. His best season came in 2023 when they finished 9-5-4 earning the #4 seed for the Big South Championships. They have advanced to the Big South Championships in three of his seasons including 2021, 2023 and 2025.

"Charleston Southern is incredibly grateful for Coach Jose Gomez and the tremendous service he has provided to Buccaneer soccer," said Jeff Barber, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics. "We respect his decision to step away from coaching, and we are equally excited to welcome him into his new role as Associate AD for Advancement and Revenue Generation. Jose brings a unique combination of skills, relationships, and in-depth knowledge of Charleston Southern and the Buc Club that will allow him to make an immediate impact on our donors, membership and overall revenue generation efforts. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue working alongside Jose and look forward to all that he will bring to our department and, most importantly, to our Buccaneer supporters."

Prior to arriving at Charleston Southern, Gomez worked in men's soccer as the Associate Head Coach at Liberty University (2013-2019) and the Head Men's Soccer Coach at Palm Beach Atlantic University (2005-2013). He led the Sailfish to their first-ever national championship in 2010 and helped lead each program to successful runs in his tenures.

Gomez was selected to the 1990-99 Big South All-Decade team for his play during his four seasons as a Liberty Flame from 1997-2000. He was the 2000 Big South Player of the Year and a four-time Big South All-Conference team member earning First-Team honors in 1999 and 2000, and Second-Team All-Conference in 1997 and 1998. Additionally, he was named to All-South Atlantic Region Team in 1999 and 2000 as well as inducted into the Flames' Hall of Fame in 2022.

Gomez was drafted by the Charlotte Eagles in 2000 and played with the team for three seasons, earning All A-League Second-Team honors in 2002. During this time, he trained with the Chicago Fire and with D.C. United. In 2004, Gomez moved to Virginia where he continued his professional career playing with the Virginia Beach Mariners for two seasons before transitioning into coaching in 2005 at Palm Beach Atlantic.

He is a three-time graduate of Liberty University with him most recently completing his Doctor of Business Administration in Marketing in 2025. Prior to that, he graduated with his Master's of Business Administration in 2005 and Bachelor of Science in Business in 2001.

Following the end of the 2026 season, Gomez will begin transitioning into his new role of Associate A.D. for Advancement and Revenue Generation. A nationwide search for the new Head Coach will begin immediately.
