
Buccaneers Take Winthrop to Five Sets on Friday Night in Rock Hill

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Charleston Southern volleyball battled Winthrop to five sets Friday night before falling to the Eagles, 3-2 (25-18, 23-25, 25-20, 18-25, 10-15), at the Winthrop Coliseum.
The Buccaneers move to 8-7 overall and 0-2 in Big South Conference play, while Winthrop improves to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in league action.
Charleston Southern opened the match with a strong offensive performance, hitting .333 with 18 kills in the opening set. After the Eagles took an early 4-2 lead, the Buccaneers responded with a 5-0 run to take a 7-4 advantage. CSU continued to control the frame, building leads of 18-13 and 22-14 before closing out the first set, 25-18.
Winthrop answered in the second set, but Charleston Southern remained within striking distance throughout the frame. The Buccaneers erased an early deficit and eventually tied the set at 19-19 before the Eagles edged ahead late. CSU tied the score again at 23-23, but Winthrop claimed the final two points to even the match with a 25-23 victory.
The Buccaneers responded emphatically in the third set, overcoming an early 7-3 deficit and battling through a series of ties. After Winthrop held an 11-10 advantage, CSU scored four straight points to take a 14-11 lead. The Buccaneers continued to build separation, using a 7-0 run to turn a 15-15 tie into a 22-15 advantage before finishing the set, 25-20.
Winthrop regained momentum in the fourth set, building an early lead and eventually moving ahead 20-12. Charleston Southern fought back with six straight points, cutting the deficit to 20-18, but the Eagles answered with five of the final six points to force a decisive fifth set.
The Eagles carried that momentum into the final frame, taking an early 6-2 advantage before CSU battled back to within one at 6-5. Winthrop responded with a 4-1 stretch to take a 10-6 lead and maintained its advantage through the finish, securing the 15-10 victory.

Brynn Minter paced the Buccaneers with 16 kills and added nine digs, two service aces and 18 points.

Faith Burch delivered one of her most efficient offensive performances of the season, recording 12 kills without an attack error while hitting .429 and adding two blocks.

Emma Bednarek added eight kills while hitting .353, along with two blocks.

Emersyn Reiter finished with eight kills and seven digs.

Tristin Sutton recorded a double-double, 26 assists and 12 digs.

Adeline Wieler led CSU defensively with 18 digs and added six assists and two aces.

As a team, Charleston Southern recorded 58 kills, 52 assists, 62 digs and six service aces. Winthrop finished with 60 kills and held a 10-4 advantage in total blocks.

The Bucs will be back in action tomorrow on October 3rd at Gardner-Webb. The match will take place at 4:00 PM at Paul Porter Arena and will not be broadcast on ESPN+.
