CHARLESTON - The Charleston Southern softball team hosted day one of the Cici's Pizza Lowcountry Classic on Friday. The Buccaneers defeated Sacred Heart 8-0 in five innings before falling to the UCONN Huskies 13-0 in five innings as well.
GAME ONE
The Bucs gained momentum in the third inning with a double from
Carsten Sandvig that brought
Blakley Kingsmore home, putting the Bucs on the board.
Emma Smith followed with a single to score Sandvig to extend the Bucs lead.
Linley Jones entered the game as a pinch runner for Smith where she stole her first base of the season advancing to second.
Camryn Martin singled and advanced to second on the throw.
Lorenzza Marcacci hit a sacrifice RBI to bring Jones home, giving the Bucs a lead 3-0 at the end of the third.
Charleston Southern added to the lead in the fourth with a single from
Blakley Kingsmore. Kingsmore then stole second and third, leaving her 7-for-7 on stolen base attempts this season.
Emma Smith singled to right field driving
Jordyn Dimond and
Blakley Kingsmore in to score, to make it 5-0.
In the fifth,
Charlee Yourman was hit by a pitch and advanced to first, and
Olivia Chuck went in to pinch run for Yourman.
Emily Chandler hit her first home run of the season to left field bringing Chuck home to extend the Bucs lead 7-0. Blakely Kingsmore tripled to right field and scored on a fielding error by the Pioneers, ending the game in the fifth with a 8-0 victory over Sacred Heart.
Riley Lauffer earned the win, pitching all five innings for the Bucs, only allowing two hits and leaving the Pioneers scoreless while picking up a season-high eight strikeouts. This marks her first shutout of the spring and second complete game.
GAME TWO
In the third inning,
Emma Villaescusa singled to right field, and
Jordyn Dimond added a single in the fourth. A single from
Addison Waring moved Dimond into scoring position, but Charleston Southern was unable to score.
In the fifth,
Cadence Walding made her first appearance of the season as a pinch hitter for
Charlee Yourman, reaching on a walk.
Linley Jones entered again as a pinch runner, this time for Walding.
Emily Chandler reached on a fielder's choice and Jones advanced to second on a throwing error by the Huskies.
Maddie Lee singled, loading the bases in the bottom of the fifth, but a double play by the Huskies kept the Bucs scoreless through the inning.
Kinsey Clopton started in the circle for the Bucs pitching 1.2 innings.
Brenna Conley came in also throwing 1.2 innings and
Gianna Deluco made an appearance throwing 1.2 innings as well with one strike out, only allowing one run.
The Huskies scored in each of the five innings played.

Charleston Southern will play in day two of the Cici's Pizza Lowcountry Classic on Saturday with the games on the day to include contests against UMass at 3 p.m. and Penn at 5:30 p.m. Each of the games will be available live on ESPN+.
