CHARLESTON - The Charleston Southern Softball team hosted day two of the CSU Kickoff tournament on Saturday, taking on George Mason and Marist. The Bucs fell to the Patriots 8-0 and the Red Foxes 14-3.
GAME ONE
The Patriots were able to build an early lead with four runs in the second inning. They tacked on another in the third to boost their lead and scored more in the fifth and seventh to push their edge to 8-0.
Brenna Conley started in the circle for the Buccaneers and threw two innings before Riley Lauffer came in at the start of the third. Lauffer threw four innings striking out three batters and allowing two runs. Mackenzie North made her first appearance of the year in the seventh inning with one strikeout and one earned run.
Offensively, the Bucs had five hits on the day. Blakley Kingsmore stole her third base of the season. Currently she is leading the team as she is 3-3 on stolen base attempts.
Camryn Martin started at first for the Buccaneers, and recorded six putouts through the first game.
GAME TWO
The visitors were able to once again get out to an early lead behind a six-run second inning. The Buccaneers were able to tally their first run of the day in the bottom half of the inning with Charlee Yourman getting the momentum going with a double. Emma Smith hit an RBI single allowing Yourman to score, putting the Bucs on the board. The Red Foxes tallied their seventh in the fourth and put up seven in the fifth to get the run rule in play.
Emily Chandler made an appearance for the Bucs in the bottom of the fifth to lead it off and reached first off an error. Sydney Spayd followed that with a double and Addison Miller singled to score Chandler. Linley Jones also appeared and reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Spayd to score and cut into the deficit, but not avoid the run rule.
Kinsey Clopton started in the circle for the Bucs, throwing 1.1 innings with three strikeouts. Riley Lauffer threw 2.2 innings allowing one run with one strikeout. Gianna Deluco made an appearance in the fifth throwing 0.1 innings with one strikeout. Mackenzie North finished out the game throwing the final 0.2 innings allowing two runs.
UP NEXT
The Buccaneers will return to CSU Softball Field on Sunday morning to round out their opening weekend. They will bring Siena and Marist back to the complex with the first pitches scheduled for 10 a.m. and noon on the final day of the tournament.
