CHARLESTON – On Thursday and Friday afternoons, the Charleston Southern Women's Tennis program took the courts against both Queens University and the Charlotte 49ers. The Bucs would defeat Queens, 4-0, and fall to Charlotte, 5-2.
Charleston Southern built momentum early against Queens, highlighted by a dominant performance from the Botha sisters and Camila Molina in singles play.
Carle Botha cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Rachel Byrne, while Amike Botha delivered the most decisive result of the day with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Kalia Angeles. Camila Molina Barranco also added a straight-set win, defeating Sofia Benhaddouch 6-3, 6-3.
Several other matches were trending in the Buccaneers' favor before play concluded. Marina Skegro had taken the opening-set tiebreak against Zoe Cvitanovic and led 7-6, 1-0, while Brenda Yoris held a commanding 6-3, 5-2 lead over Mathilde Bris. Carlota Farres Carreter was also locked in a tight battle, leading 7-5, 2-2 against Lucy Hogan.
Charleston Southern was equally impressive in doubles. The pairing of Skegro and Farres secured a 6-2 win over Cvitanovic and Bris, while Yoris and Molina matched that scoreline with a 6-2 victory against Byrne and Benhaddouch. The Botha-duo of Carle and Amike were ahead 5-3 in their match when play ended.
The Buccaneers faced a tougher challenge Friday against Charlotte.
Skegro led the way for Charleston Southern in singles, earning a strong 6-4, 6-4 victory over Shona Nakano. Amike Botha also battled back to claim a win, rallying from a first-set loss to defeat Andrea Chacon 1-6, 6-5 after Chacon was forced to retire.
Charlotte claimed the remaining singles matches, including wins from Lucia Aranda, Prisca Abbas, Yelyzave Chainykova, and Paula Dougherty.
The 49ers also took the doubles point, earning victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions before the third match could be completed.
