CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston Southern softball team hosted South Carolina State for a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon, dropping both contests by scores of 3-2 and 7-2.
GAME ONE
Charleston Southern threatened early, as Camryn Martin drew a walk to open the second inning but was left stranded.
The Buccaneers broke through in the third. Jordyn Dimond worked a lead off walk and swiped second before Blakley Kingsmore delivered a single up the middle. A throw on the play allowed Dimond to score, giving the Bucs a 1-0 lead.
Carsten Sandvig extended the advantage in the fourth, launching her first home run of the season to make it 2-0. Cadence Walding followed with a walk, but Charleston Southern was unable to add to the lead.
The Bulldogs answered in the fifth, scoring two to even the game 2-2.
Maddie Lee singled to begin the sixth, and Harper Schoeneweis reached on an error and advanced to second on the throw, but the Bucs couldn't capitalize.
The Bulldogs took control in the seventh, scoring the go-ahead run to secure a 3-2 victory.
Brenna Conley threw 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Riley Lauffer came in to relieve Conley, throwing 0.2 innings allowing one hit.
GAME TWO
South Carolina State struck first in game two, taking a 1-0 lead in the opening frame.
In the bottom of the first, Blakley Kingsmore singled before stealing second. Jordyn Dimond singled bringing Kingsmore in to score, tying the game 1-1.
Maddie Lee singled and stole second in the third but was left stranded, and Charleston Southern missed another scoring opportunity in the fourth. Sandvig singled and Emily Chandler followed with a double, but both runners remained on base.
South Carolina State pulled ahead for good in the fifth, extending the lead to 4-2 before adding three insurance runs in the seventh to secure a 7-2 win.
Riley Lauffer started in the circle for the Buccaneers tossing four innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. Kinsey Clopton also made an appearance, allowing one run. Mackenzie North tossed 2.2 innings allowing four runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Gianna Deluco threw 0.1 innings.
UP NEXT
The Buccaneers are on the road next week for a doubleheader against Furman on April 14. Game one is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. with game two to follow at 5:00 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
