HIGH POINT, N.C. – Charleston Southern opened their time at the Big South Championships on Monday and sit in third place in the team standings with 31 points through the first five events. The Buccaneers swept the podium in the 10K to highlight the day's performances.
In the final event of the day, Charleston Southern dominated in the men's 10K.
Martin Iriondo,
Hayden Goode and
Micah Gilpatric went 1-2-3 in the event and won it strategically as the race developed. The lead pack had dwindled to four in final two miles and the Bucs' trio dropped High Point's Avery Crowell with a kilometer to go as they dropped to sub 70 laps. Iriondo had a time of 30:24.34, Goode ran a personal best of 30:29.57 and Gilpatric had 30:32.32. Goode's time moves him up a spot to eighth in the school record books for the event as well. Also,
Lin Scott competed in the event and claimed sixth with a career best of 31:12.21. In total, Charleston Southern tallied 27 points from the event
Other finals competed during the day were the men's hammer and javelin throws. Miles was the top finisher for CSU in the hammer, taking ninth with a 50.79m. In the javelin, it was a tightly contested field with
Landry Polk and
Jaden Bellush taking sixth and eighth. Polk had a 57.02m and Bellush threw a career best of 55.29m.
There were prelims held in three events on the day including the 400m hurdles, 200m dash and 1500m run. The Bucs sent all five of their entrees through in the 1500m with four of them earning advancement as a top four finisher in their heat. Going through to the finals are Iriondo, Gilpatric,
Mason Raasch,
Caleb Kenyon and
Collin Kleinhen.
In the 400m hurdles,
Luciano Custodio and
Jayden Anderson each advanced to Wednesday's finals based on their times. Custodio had a season best of 52.77 while Anderson had a 53.90.
The 200m was one of the top events for the day for the Buccaneers with
Laden Beckwith and
Aden Price each winning their heats and recording the first and second fastest times of all entrees. Beckwith ran a 20.72 for a massive new personal best and the second-fastest time in school history. Price tied his personal best in the event with a 20.86.
The second day of the Big South Championships will begin on Tuesday, May 12 with the field events to begin at 2 p.m. for the Buccaneer entrees. The track events will start at 5 p.m. with the coverage on ESPN+ to begin at 2:30 p.m.
