Early Offense Powers #4 Charleston Southern Past #5 Radford in First Day of Big South Championships

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – #4 Charleston Southern claimed the first game of the Big South Championships on Wednesday by an 8-5 final score over #5 Radford. The Buccaneers collected nine doubles in the contest to tie the program record and collected their 30th win of 2026.

Charleston Southern was the first team to get on the scoreboard, using three consecutive doubles in the first inning to score a pair of runs. Caden Wolfley got it going by hitting a ball deep to left field, followed by Tyler Wright up the middle, scoring Wolfley and Alex Marot off the wall in right to score Wright, giving CSU an early 2-0 lead. Radford responded with Breckin Nace hammering a solo homer to centerfield to lead off the second inning.

In the bottom of the second, Charleston Southern tallied five runs, expanding their early lead. Ethan Reader doubled to left center to score Nathan Martinez. Later in the frame, Wolfley had a two-out single through the right side to score Reader. The Bucs then loaded up the bases and saw Garrison Barile drive a double to left center, clearing the bases pushing the score to 7-1.

In the third, Radford got a bases loaded walk and another on a passed ball with the bases loaded. In the bottom half, Wolfley had an RBI single to the shortstop, bringing home Kain Collins, making the score 8-3. After this, the teams combined to post 0s on the scoreboard for the next four innings.

In the top of the eighth, after the first batter, the game entered a lightning delay for an hour and a half. Following it, Radford tallied a pair of runs to cut their deficit down to 8-5 to finish off the frame and draw closer. Neither team went on to score more and the game ended on a flyout to Collins in center to move the Buccaneers to the next round and remain undefeated.

Titus Von Kapff picked up the victory and moved to 7-4 on the season. He threw the first 5.1, allowing a pair of earned runs while allowing five hits and five walks and struck out four batters. Hayden Henry worked the next 1.2 without issuing a hit and striking out four batters. He allowed an earned run off two walks in the appearance. Drew Dawson had the final 2.0 and saw one earned run get charged to him as well as a hit and two walks.

At the plate, the Bucs posted 14 hits with Wolfley, Wright and Barile each picking up three in the contest while Collins and Marot each had two. Each of Barile's hits were a double with both of Marot's being one as well. Barile had three RBIs to lead the squad and Wolfley had two.
