CHARLESTON - The Charleston Southern women's soccer team battled USC Upstate down to the wire Wednesday afternoon, but a late second-half goal lifted the Spartans to a 2-1 victory over the Buccaneers at CSU Soccer Field.

After a scoreless opening half, USC Upstate broke through in the 60th minute when Danielle Trovato headed home a pass from Cansu Kara to give the Spartans a 1-0 advantage.

CSU answered in the 74th minute as Danika Birch converted a penalty kick to level the match at 1-1. Birch's fourth goal of the season gave the Buccaneers new life with just over 16 minutes remaining.

The Spartans regained the lead in the 82nd minute when Lily MacCausland connected on a deep shot outside the box that went just over the hands of goalkeeper Avery Mason. The Bucs continued to push late, earning two corner kick opportunities in the final five minutes, but USC Upstate held on for the 2-1 victory.
