CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern gave Liberty every run
they had in Big South action Saturday, but were unable to slow down
the offense of the Flames, as they dropped an 80-95 contest at the
CSU Field House. CSU shot better than 48 percent from the floor
and 82 percent from the line, but couldn't slow down Liberty, who
shot 56 percent for the game. CSU moved to 7-17 on the year with a
2-11 conference record, while Liberty improved to 19-8 overall and
10-5 in the Big South.
Omar Carter posted his seventh double-double of the season with
21 points and 10 boards, leading the way for the Bucs. CSU also
got a big lift from Jamarco Warren, who had 21 points on 8-14
shooting, including 5 threes. For the Flames, Seth Curry led all
scorers with 28 points, with help from Anthony Smith who had 24.
The Bucs got off to a quick start with back-to-back threes from
Warren and Austin Johnson. Liberty, however responded with a 16-4
run to take a 16-10 lead with 14:17 on the clock. CSU had five
unanswered points, but the Flames held on to the lead after several
traded baskets.
Liberty extended their lead out to seven, but a Warren three put
the score at 22-26 with 8:31 left in the half. CSU had trouble
cutting into the lead, but consecutive baskets from Johnson and
Carter pushed the score to 30-34 with 3:04 remaining in the half.
The Bucs trailed by just three at one point, but a 7-0 run helped
the Flames to the biggest lead of the game at 46-36. Tovi Bailey
hit two big free throws with 4 seconds on the clock, making it a
38-46 halftime score.
Carter led the Bucs heading into the locker room with 13 points and
7 rebounds. Warren had two big threes en route six points in the
first 20 minutes. The Bucs struggled to slow down Curry, who had
19 points to lead all scorers.
Warren's two first half threes were also significant to the CSU
record books, as he broke the school record for single season
threes. The record was set just a year ago at 81 by teammate Chris
Moore, but Warren now sits on top with 85 threes to date.
Two JT Knight free throws put CSU on the board first in the second
half, with a 38-46 deficit. The Bucs went on to surge for an 11-0
run, thanks in large part to two Warren threes, tying things up at
55 apiece. The Flames however, responded with their biggest run of
the game, taking back a 67-57 lead, with 13 minutes on the
clock.
CSU cut the lead back to six after four consecutive Quinton Goods
points, making it a 63-69 score. Liberty managed another 8-1 run,
this time taking their biggest lead at 77-64 with 8:05 remaining in
the game.
Another run cut the deficit to six, but the Bucs were unable to
hold off the Liberty offense. A Warren layup had the score at
74-83 with 5:03 on the clock, but it was all Flames from that
point. Liberty led by as many as 18 before a final 80-95 score,
that gave head coach Ritchie McKay his 200th career victory.
CSU will have another chance to defend their home court vs. Radford
on Monday, February 16th, in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
