SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Two days after shocking
6th-ranked Florida, the Charleston Southern baseball team
capitalized on their newly-earned momentum with an 8-5 victory over
USC Upstate, Tuesday at Harley Park. CSU starter Andrew White
dominated the Spartans over six innings of work to pick up his
first win of the season.
White (1-0) allowed just two runs in six innings on the mound.
He struck out four and gave up four hits. Patrick Dolan recorded
the final out of the game for his first save of the 2010 campaign.
Upstate's Ryan Newell (1-2) was saddled with the loss after
allowing three runs in an inning and a third of relief duty.
Spartan starter Scott DeCecco did not factor into the decision, as
he left after three innings without allowing a run.
After getting locked out by DeCecco in the first three frames,
the Buccaneers (7-10) teed off on Newell in the 4th. Derek Smith
led off the inning by drawing a four-pitch walk before Matt Still
smashed his second home run of the season, a towering shot over the
left centerfield wall, to make the score 2-0.
The Spartans (7-11) scored without a base hit in the bottom half
of the 4th. After reaching on a walk, Jimmy Tanner advanced to
third base on a throwing error by Still. The Upstate catcher came
home on a sacrifice fly from Austin Moyer to cut the CSU lead in
half.
The Bucs got the run back in the 5th. After Jon Matthews coaxed
a walk off a Newell and stole his first career base, Smith came
through with a two-out RBI single off of Robert Stegbauer to make
the score 3-1.
CSU struck again in the 6th. One plate appearance after tallying
his first collegiate hit, Drew Woodall notched his first career RBI
on a double that just barely touched inside the third base bag.
Walt Quattlebaum scored on the play to put the Bucs ahead, 4-1.
Woodall reached third himself, but was unable to score as
back-to-back groundouts left him stranded 90 feet from home.
Upstate tacked on a run in the bottom of the 6th. A two-out
single by Joe Barnes brought Moyer to the plate, cutting CSU's lead
to 4-2.
Stuart Lake's team responded by scoring their biggest inning of
the day in the 7th. After a pair of singles put runners on the
corners, Patrick Dolan smacked a three-run home run off of
Stegbauer to give the Bucs a five-run lead.
Another Buccaneer crossed the plate in the 8th inning. Woodall
lead off the inning with a walk, then came home two batters later
on a Brantley Meier bloop single to make the score 8-2.
The home squad added their final three runs in the 9th. The
first came on a sacrifice fly from Gaither Bumgardner, and the
second one crossed home when Tanner drew a bases loaded walk. Dolan
then came on to pitch for the Buccaneers and conceded a run-scoring
single by Tyler Cook. However, the sophomore got Moyer to pop out,
ending the game with the bases loaded.
Meier, Smith, Dolan and Woodall each had two-hit days for the
Buccaneers, while Chinners went 1-for-5 to extend his hitting
streak to a career-best 12 games. The Spartans has just seven hits,
the second-fewest total allowed by the CSU pitching staff in
2010.
The win, combined with CSU's 8-4 victory over the Spartans a
week earlier, gives the Buccaneers a season sweep of USC Upstate in
2010.
The Buccaneers head back to Charleston for a Wednesday match-up
with Savannah State before opening Big South Conference play on
Friday against Coastal Carolina. First pitch for both games is
scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The Spartans take on East Tennessee State
Friday at 6:00 p.m.
