CHARLESTON, S.C. - Brantley Meier led the way with three hits
and Jesse Cadenhead earned his second win of the season as the
Charleston Southern baseball team defeated Savannah State 9-1
Wednesday afternoon at CSU Ballpark.
The Buccaneers (8-10) outhit the Tigers 16-9, and they extended
their win streak to a season-long three games. SSU (3-11) entered
the game averaging 8.3 runs per game, and the team was held to its
lowest run output of the season.
Charleston Southern manufactured a 1-0 lead after Meier led off
the bottom of the first with a double to left field. Jon Matthews
bunted him over to third and Meier scored on a sacrifice fly from
Nick Chinners.
CSU pulled ahead with three runs in the second, which was
started when Patrick Dolan hit his third homer of the season over
the left-field wall. Brandon McKinney reached on an error and would
later score, and Bentley Christmas scored on a Tyler Thornburg
fielder's choice.
After a scoreless third inning, the home blue and gold blew the
game open with four runs in the fourth. Christmas led off the
inning with a double, and he scored when Meier singled up the
middle. Matt Still drove home both Matthews and Meier, and Chinners
later scored to cap off the frame.
Kyle Ward singled in the fifth to add another insurance run,
driving home Matthews to push the score to 9-0.
Dondregius Jackson broke up the shutout when he led off the
seventh with a double to left center and scored on the next at bat
when Dychal Bowles drove him home with a double to left field.
Neither team plated a run the rest of the way, and Charleston
Southern took its largest win of the season.
Meier finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Matthews, Chinners and Christmas all recorded two hits and Chinners
and Still both drove home two runs. Matthews and Christmas each
scored twice.
Cadenhead (2-2) scattered four hits over five shutout innings.
He struck out five and only walked one. Matt Walker, George
Schaefer, Walt Quattlebaum and Michael Catoe all pitched an inning
of relief duty after Cadenhead exited with the huge lead. Schaefer
gave up the lone run, and the four relievers only allowed five
hits.
Jonathan Ross and Bowles were the only Tigers to record multiple
hits, and Jackson was the only Savannah State player to score a
run.
Kevin Herlihy (0-4) lasted just 3.2 innings, allowing eight runs
(six earned) on 11 hits. Jason Wynn relieved Herlihy and pitched
0.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits. Shawn Gallagher, Andrew
Garren and Eric Ransom threw the final 3.2 innings and the trio of
relievers held CSU scoreless.
The Buccaneers have now recorded double-digit hits in their last
four games.
Charleston Southern returns to action with a three-game set
March 19-21 with Coastal Carolina University. The Buccaneers and
No. 8-ranked Chanticleers will meet all three days at 2 p.m. at CSU
Ballpark.
