SAVANNAH, Ga. - Three different players hit home runs and Stew
Brase had a solid day at the mound as the Charleston Southern
baseball team earned the season sweep over Savannah State
University with a 12-6 victory Tuesday afternoon at Tiger
Field.
Charleston Southern (9-12, 0-2 Big South Conference) knocked
around the Tiger pitching staff to the tune of 17 hits, and played
nearly error-free baseball, committing just one. SSU (6-12) had
just seven hits and recorded two errors.
Brantley Meier was welcomed back after missing the last two
games by getting hit by a pitch on his first plate appearance. Jon
Matthews sacrificed Meier to second, and then he stole third to get
himself into scoring position. Nick Chinners extended his hitting
streak to 16 games with a single to center field, and the Bucs were
on the board first.
The Tigers touched up CSU starting pitcher Stew Brase for three
runs in the first inning, and Charleston Southern was unable to
answer until the fourth.
After Matt Still got on base with a double in the fourth inning,
Walt Quattlebaum drove him home with a single to center to cut the
lead in half.
The Buccaneers held Savannah State scoreless in the home half of
the fourth, and then took over the game in the fifth.
Bentley Christmas got the inning started with a single, and he
was later driven home by a Matthews single. After a pitching
change, Chinners greeted the reliever with a two-run home run that
sailed over the left field fence to give Charleston Southern a 5-3
lead.
Savannah State was able to cut the CSU lead in half with a run
in the fifth, but Patrick Dolan stretched the lead back out to two
with a solo home run in the sixth.
Tyler Thornburg hit his team-leading fifth homer of the season
in the seventh inning, and Quattlebaum later scored in the frame to
push the lead to 8-4.
All threats of a comeback where stymied with a four-run eighth
by Charleston Southern. The inning was highlighted by a Tom Burkett
double that scored two runs.
The Tigers plated runs in both the eighth and ninth innings, but
the game was already out of reach as the Buccaneers left Savannah
with the 12-6 victory.
Matthews, Chinners and Burkett all finished 3-for-5 on the day.
Chinners led CSU with three runs batted in, and four different Bucs
scored twice.
Stew Brase (1-1) earned his first win of the season after
scattering five hits over six innings and allowing four runs. He
struck out six and didn't walk any Tigers. Tim Flight earned his
first collegiate save after pitching the final three innings. He
gave up just two runs (one earned) on two hits, while striking out
four and walking just one.
Jonathan Ross was the lone Tiger to record multiple hits, and he
also scored twice to lead Savannah State. Dexter Kelley and Matthew
Nowacki both drove home two batters.
Eric Ransom (0-1) took the loss after he allowed four runs on
seven hits in 4.2 innings. Kevin Herlihy pitched an inning of
relief and allowed two runs on four hits. Shawn Gallagher pitched
the next two innings and gave up six runs on four hits. Andrew
Garren and Jackson May combined to pitch the final 1.1 innings.
Charleston Southern returns home for a 2 p.m. tilt March 24
against cross-town foe College of Charleston.
