CHARLESTON, S.C. - Brantley Meier had a two-run triple in the fourth to the tie the game, but Winthrop University had too much firepower as the Charleston Southern baseball team lost the rubber match with the Eagles 7-3 Sunday afternoon at CSU Ballpark.

CSU (15-20, 4-7 Big South Conference) went error-free, but an 11-7 hit advantage for Winthrop (15-16, 3-6 Big South) allowed the road team to steal the series.

Andrew White took the mound for CSU and got through the first two innings unscathed. He allowed a four-pitch walk to Adam Gliebe to start off the third, and Gliebe would later score along with Tyler McBride by way of a double down the left-field line from Tyler Cook.

Winthrop added a third run when Matt Thielepape touched home plate. He reached base on a single up the middle, and scored when Gliebe drove him in with a successful squeeze bunt attempt.

Derek Smith got the rally started in the home half of the fourth when he singled up the middle with one out. Jaren Sustar walked, and Jesse Cadenhead struck out to record the second out. Meier was able to drive home Smith and Sustar with a triple down the left-field line, and Jon Matthews grounded out to third base to end the inning.

Tom Burkett and Matt Still recorded back-to-back doubles in the fifth, and Still's two-bagger brought home Burkett to tie the game at 3-3.

The CSU rally was quickly stifled in the top of the sixth when White began to show signs of fatigue on the mound. Thielapape walked and Chas Crane singled to put two aboard. Both Eagles scored by way of a Gliebe single, and they ended the frame with a 5-3 lead.

Patrick Dolan relieved White in the seventh inning and faced five batters without recording an out. He gave up four walks and a single to give up two runs and push the deficit out to 7-3. Tyler Vick came on and shut the door on Winthrop, but the CSU bats went silent and were unable to generate any offense the rest of the way.

Meier led the way with his 2-for-5 performance, while driving home two runs. Still also recorded an RBI after finishing 1-for-5.

White (1-3) pitched six innings and gave up five runs on seven hits. Dolan struggled through the seventh, and Vick pitched the final three innings without allowing a run.

Cook and Gliebe each had three hits and combined for five RBI. Thielepape was 1-for-3 and scored twice.

Wade Newman (3-2) tossed six innings and allowed just three runs on seven hits. He struck out a career-high-tying eight and walked just three. Tommy Lawrence, Eric Ruth and Tyler Mizenko all threw an inning of relief and none of them gave up a hit.

Charleston Southern will travel to Wilmington, N.C., for a 6 p.m. April 13 clash with University of North Carolina Wilmington.
