WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Charleston Southern baseball team held the lead throughout the majority of the contest, but University of North Carolina Wilmington pulled ahead in the eighth and held on for a 5-4 victory Tuesday night at Brooks Field.

CSU (15-21, 4-7 Big South Conference) was outhit 10-8 by UNCW (20-13, 6-3 Colonial Athletic Association) and each team committed an error.

Charleston Southern got started early as they posted two runs before the Seahawks had a chance to respond. The team sporting the road gold uniforms began the game with three-straight singles from Brandon McKinney, Tyler Thornburg and Tom Burkett. McKinney touched home on Burkett's hit and Thornburg scored on a fielder's choice from Nick Chinners.

UNCW answered with two in the home half of the second. Cody Stanley and Robbie Monday each reached base to lead off the frame, and both would score on a two-out triple to the right-field corner from Michael Bass.

CSU regained the lead after Burkett was able to manufacture a run in the top of the fourth. He doubled to lead off the inning and moved 90 feet from home on a groundout by Chinners. Patrick Dolan put a ball in play to second base, and Burkett was able to give CSU a 3-2 lead on the RBI groundout.

Stanley tied the game with a run in the sixth, but Drew Woodall was moved around after getting hit by a pitch to lead off the seventh. Bentley Christmas sacrificed Woodall over to second, and he moved to third on a fielding error. He helped CSU regain the lead after scoring on a groundout from Brandon McKinney.

The Seahawks would not go away, however, as Bass was able to tie the game once again after leading off the bottom of the seventh with a single and later scoring.

After Charleston Southern was unable to plate a runner in the eighth, UNCW took advantage by taking its first lead of the game in the bottom half of the frame. Monday doubled to right field to lead off the inning, and he scored the game-winning run on a throwing error from Christmas.

Christmas was attempting to convert an inning-ending double play, but the throw over to first base was just low enough for Chinners to catch, and Monday was able to reach home on the error.

The Buccaneers went 1-2-3 in the ninth to end the game and lose their third-straight contest.

Jesse Cadenhead tied his season high with seven innings pitched, reaching the mark in each of his last two starts. He scattered eight hits and four runs across the seven-inning stretch to earn the no-decision. Tim Flight (1-1) took his first loss of the year after throwing the eighth and allowing two hits and the unearned game-winner.

Burkett and Thornburg led CSU with two hits each. Four different Bucs recorded a run batted in and four players scored. Burkett and McKinney had one of each.

Thomas Jones started for UNCW and allowed three runs on six hits in just four innings. He was taken out in favor of Seth Frankoff, who allowed an unearned run and one hit in 2 1/3 innings. Andrew Harnage pitched a perfect 2/3 of an inning, and Bryan Booth (3-1) took the win after pitching the eighth and allowing just one hit and no runs. Stephen Harrold picked up his fourth save of the year after throwing a perfect ninth.

Stanley, Monday and Bass all had two hits, and Bass drove home two runners. Stanley and Monday each scored twice to lead UNCW.

The Buccaneers will get a few days rest before traveling to Clinton, S.C., for a weekend conference series with Presbyterian College. CSU will do battle with the Blue Hose April 16-18, and the first game of the series is set to begin at 3 p.m.
