CLINTON, S.C. - Bentley Christmas and Brantley Meier each recorded career highs in hits as the duo powered the Charleston Southern baseball team to a 9-8 victory in 10 innings over Presbyterian College Sunday afternoon at PC Baseball Complex.

Meier led the way with a 5-for-6 performance, and Christmas was also on fire with a 3-for-4 day from the plate. Christmas also blasted his third-career home run. The eight combined hits from the two Buccaneers were part of a season-high-tying 18-hit performance from CSU (16-23, 5-9 Big South Conference).

PC (11-24, 3-9 Big South) had just 12 hits and each team recorded one error.

CSU jumped out to an early lead following a double from Meier and an RBI single from Tom Burkett before PC had a chance to bat.

The Blue Hose drew even as Gabe Grammer manufactured the tying run in the bottom of the opening frame. He led off the first with a walk, was sacrificed over to second and advanced to third on an unassisted groundout from Kenny Bryant. Grammer scored after Tony Micklon doubled up the middle with two outs.

Patrick Dolan led off the second with an infield single and would later score to again push CSU ahead by one.

Presbyterian College answered with a three-run third to take a 4-2 advantage. Bryant ripped a two-out double down the left-field line, and Micklon blasted a two-run homer. Nate Horton also scored with two outs in the inning.

It didn't take Charleston Southern long to respond, as Christmas tied the game up with his third home run of the year. He drove home Brandon McKinney, who reached base by way of a ground-rule double.

After a scoreless fifth, the Buccaneers pushed ahead with a huge sixth. Matt Still led off the frame with a single to left field. McKinney followed Still's hit with a walk, and Christmas used an infield single to load the bases. Jon Matthews contributed with an RBI sac fly, which scored Still and gave CSU the 5-4 lead.

Meier reached on a fielder's choice, which scored McKinney, and Christmas also scored on the play following a throwing error from Micklon.

PC was held scoreless in the home half of the frame, but the Blue Hose were able to again draw even with three runs in the seventh.

Jeff Tatum led off the inning with a walk, and Mack Hite singled to right field to put two aboard with only one out. Both Tatum and Hite scored on a triple from Bryant, and Bryant also scored following a single from Horton. Aaron Preston struck out to stifle the threat.

Neither team could break through in the eighth, but Charleston Southern found a way to thrust the lead back with one more run in the ninth. Burkett sent a double down the left-field line to get things started, and he advanced to third base following a fly out to center field by Nick Chinners. Burkett touched home plate after Tyler Thornburg sent a line drive back up the middle.

CSU could not seal the deal in regulation, however, as Hite scored an unearned run following a throwing error by Christmas to send the game into extra innings.

Meier and Matthews made sure CSU would get one more chance to close the door on the Blue Hose.

Matthews came through in the clutch as he recorded his first hit of the day with two outs in the top of the tenth. Meier drove Matthews home with a line drive up the middle, and the Buccaneers found themselves just three outs away from victory.

Preston flew out to right field and Ryan Morris grounded out to Still to lead off the bottom of the tenth, but Harmon and Matthew Hill each singled to make things interesting. Grammer was unable to do any damage as he flew out to right field to end the game and give Charleston Southern the victory.

Andrew White pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits. He took a no-decision after walking five and striking out three. Jesse Cadenhead (5-3) pitched 3 2/3 innings and was nearly lights out in the winning relief effort. He allowed just one unearned run on four hits and struck out three.

Meier and Christmas combined for eight hits, four runs batted in and three runs scored. Burkett, Dolan and Still all had two hits to aid the CSU offensive attack. McKinney scored twice.

PC starting pitcher Joe Hammond lasted just 3 2/3 innings after CSU touched him up for four runs on eight hits. Steven Richardson allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits in just 1 2/3 innings of relief, and Rodney Scruggs pitched a perfect 2/3 of an inning. Jordan Pace allowed a run and five hits in 2 2/3 innings, and Andrew Foushee (1-3) took the loss after throwing the final 1 1/3 innings. He allowed the game-winning run and two hits.

Bryant led PC with a 4-for-5 day, and he also collected two RBI and two runs. Micklon and Horton had four hits combined, and Micklon drove home four of his teammates.

Next up for Charleston Southern will be a midweek two-game set with Florida State University. The Buccaneers will travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to do battle with the Seminoles April 20-21 at 6 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively.

Presbyterian College will travel to Greenville, S.C., for a 7 p.m. tilt April 22 with Furman University.
