CHARLESTON, S.C. - Drew Woodall clobbered a game-winning two-run double in the 8th inning, sending the Charleston Southern baseball team to a 7-5 victory over Winthrop Friday at CSU Ballpark. The Buccaneers (15-18, 4-5 Big South Conference) have now won three games in a row and five of their last six.

Winthrop put a pair of base runners on in the 9th inning, but the game ended when Jesse Cadenhead struck out Adam Gliebe on a 3-2 breaking ball.

Cadenhead (4-3) pitched the final two innings and earned the victory for Charleston Southern, while Tyler Mizenko (0-3) surrendered two runs in the 8th to take the loss. Buccaneer starter Anthony Markham pitched one of his finest games of the year, allowing five runs (two earned) in seven innings, but he did not factor into the decision.

Tyler Thornburg wasted no time getting the Buccaneers on the board in the bottom half of the 1st. With a runner on first base, the Atlanta native took a 3-2 pitch from Winthrop starter Robert Lake over the left field wall for his 6th home run of the season. The homer was the 23rd in Thornburg's career, moving him past Hardy Ferguson for 4th all-time in school history, and it gave CSU a 2-0 lead.

Winthrop (13-16, 1-6 BSC) crossed the scoring threshold in the top half of the 3rd frame. Eddie Rohan got the Eagles on the board with a run-scoring single, and Tyler McBride tied the game by scoring on a Markham wild pitch. The Eagles took the lead later in the inning when Rohan scored on an error by Jon Matthews in centerfield, making the score 3-2.

Defensive issues got the best of the Bucs again in the 4th inning. With Tyler Cook at the plate, a groundball skidded between the legs of Matt Still, allowing Zak Blair to score and give the Eagles a 4-2 advantage.

The bottom of the order got CSU back on the board in the 5th inning. With one out, Woodall smoked a double that touched down inside of the right field line. The CSU catcher was followed by Bentley Christmas, whose looping single brought Woodall to the plate and closed the gap to one run. Two batters later, Matthews reached on a throwing error by catcher Tyler Donovan and Christmas scored all the way from 1st base to tie the game at 4 a side.

Thanks in large part to a pair of Markham walks, Winthrop loaded the bases with two out in the 6th. But the junior hurler stood tall in the end and struck out McBride to escape the inning unharmed.

The home nine put their first two batters on in the bottom of inning number six. Tom Burkett drew a walk and advanced a base on a throwing error by Lake on Still's bunt attempt. However, the next three Buc batters failed to capitalize, as Patrick Dolan popped out on a bunt attempt, Walt Quattlebaum grounded into a fielder's choice and Woodall struck out to keep the game tied.

Winthrop surged back in front in the 7th inning. With one out and runners on the corners, Sean Sullivan grounded a single right up the middle, breaking the tie and making the score 5-4.

But Charleston Southern rallied again in the bottom of the inning. After Christmas walked and Matthews doubled, Thornburg was clutch again, tying the game with a deep sacrifice fly to center.

That set the stage for Woodall's heroics in the 8th inning. After Quattlebaum doubled to put two runners on, the freshman delivered a two-bagger of his own the brought a pair of tallies to the plate and gave CSU a 7-5 advantage they would not relinquish.

Thornburg's three-RBI day was his first of the 2010 season. Woodall and Matthews each finished 2-for-4 on the day.

Sullivan was the only player from either team to record three hits in the game. The Eagles have now lost six games in a row.

Charleston Southern and Winthrop square off again Saturday in the second of the three-game set. Thornburg (5-1, 3.86 ERA) will take the mound for CSU, while Matteo D'Angelo (2-3, 5.23 ERA) will counter for the Eagles. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
