COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Charleston Southern
baseball team fell in their final mid-week road game of the 2010
season, 10-2, Wednesday night at Carolina Stadium to No. 8 South
Carolina. The Buccaneers (17-31) have now lost seven consecutive
contests.
CSU finishes the season 1-3 against Southeastern Conference
opponents, with the lone win a 6-3 decision over No. 6 Florida on
March 14. The loss drops CSU to 2-9 in 2010 against ranked
teams.
Brantley Meier was 2-for-4 on the day with an RBI to lead the
CSU offense, while Drew Woodall was 2-for-3. Adam Matthews paced
the South Carolina attack with three hits, while four other
Gamecocks had a pair of hits.
Starting for the first time in over a month, Charlie McCready
(0-6) took the loss for CSU. The southpaw allowed seven runs and
four home runs in 2.1 innings of action. Jose Mata (6-1) pitched a
perfect inning for the Gamecocks to pick up the win.
The Gamecocks (38-11) got off and running in the bottom half of
the 1st frame. With two on and two out, Adrian Morales smacked a
single into left, plating Jackie Bradley Jr. and giving the home
side a quick 1-0 lead.
South Carolina's lead doubled in the 2nd inning, when Matthews
connected on his fifth home run of the season, a no-doubter to
straightaway center field. Two batters later, Bobby Haney connected
on a homer of his own, this one a two-run shot, making the score
4-0.
Christian Walker led off the 3rd inning with another South
Carolina home run, launching a shot to deep left center and adding
the fifth Gamecock tally of the game to the scoreboard. Three
batters later, Nick Ebert pounded a two-run shot to the same exact
spot, putting the home team up by seven. The home run was the
second in as many days for Ebert and knocked McCready out of the
game.
After a scoreless 4th inning, South Carolina cranked up the
scoring machine again in the 5th, when Brady Thomas doubled off the
right field fence, chasing Matthews home. Later in the frame, Whit
Merrifield traded places with Thomas on a run-scoring two-bagger to
make the score 9-0.
Charleston Southern broke through in the 7th frame, when
Gamecock reliever Colby Holmes issued four walks, including a
run-scoring base on balls to Meier that gave the Bucs their first
run of the game. But Steven Neff came on to strike out Jaren Sustar
with the sacks packed to end the scoring threat and keep the score
9-1.
South Carolina tacked on a run in the bottom of the inning, when
Bradley singled home Ebert to increase the lead to 10-1.
The Bucs joined the home run party in the 8th inning, when Matt
Still crushed a pitch over the left field wall. The bomb was his
sixth of the season and closed the scoring account for both
squads.
With his two-hit day, Meier now has 71 for the season, nine shy
of the all-time CSU record, set by Justin Fyle in 2006.
Charleston Southern stays on the road and resumes Big South
Conference play on Friday, when they face UNC Asheville at 2:00
p.m. The Gamecocks face Arkansas on the road, Friday at 7:35
