CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern
baseball squad dropped their final non-conference game of 2010 on
Tuesday, falling to UNC Wilmington, 6-5, at CSU Ballpark.
The Buccaneers (17-35) trailed, 6-1, heading into the bottom of
the 7th before rallying to score the final four runs of the game.
CSU put the tying run on base in both the 8th and 9th frames but
could not draw even.
Walt Quattlebaum and Tom Burkett each went 2-for-4 to pace the
Buccaneers, while Brantley Meier recorded one hit on the day to
give him 78 for the season, two behind Justin Fyle for the CSU
single season record.
Michael Bass and Michael Rooney each had a pair of hits for the
Seahawks (29-24), while Robbie Monday drove home a game-high four
runs.
Combined with a 5-4 decision on April 13, the victory gives the
Seahawks a season sweep over CSU. The Buccaneers end the 2010
campaign with a 1-4 record against members of the Colonial Athletic
Association.
Stew Brase (2-6) took the loss, his fifth consecutive losing
decision. The junior was solid, however, allowing just two early
runs in four innings of action. Daniel Cropper (2-4) picked up the
win after giving up a single run in six innings while striking out
seven Buccaneers. Stephen Harrold recorded the final six outs for
the Seahawks to earn his sixth save of the season.
A leadoff walk and two singles up the middle cost Brase in the
1st inning. Monday gave the Seahawks the lead with an RBI
groundout, and a run-scoring single from Hunter Ridge made it 2-0
after half of an inning.
Batting clean-up for the first time in more than a month,
Quattlebaum got the Bucs on the board in the 2nd frame. The
sophomore hammered the first pitch of the frame over the center
field fence for his fourth home run of the season, making the score
2-1.
UNCW looked to have blown the game wide open in the 5th inning.
Grayson Evans tacked on a run with an RBI single through the left
side of the infield, and Monday doubled the Seahawk tally with a
three-run homer that just cleared the right field fence. The blast
was his 18th of the season and made the score 6-1.
A pair of freshman got Charleston Southern back into the game in
the 7th inning. Jaren Sustar reignited the offense with an RBI
single, and Drew Woodall plated a run with a double in the gap,
drawing the Bucs to within three runs. Later in the frame, Meier
brought a run to the plate with a run-scoring grounder making the
score 6-4.
The Bucs added another run in the 8th, when Burkett dropped a
single into left field that chased Nick Chinners home. Later in the
frame, the Bucs had the tying run in scoring position with no one
out, but they could not capitalize and fell in the end by just a
one-run margin.
The back end of the bullpen was stellar for CSU, as relievers
Kyle Ward and Corey Deighan combined to pitch a scoreless 3.1
innings. Ward struck out two on the day, while Deighan did not
allow a hit.
Chinners had one hit on the day and is now batting .381 on the
season.
CSU closes out the regular season with a three-game series
against High Point, beginning Thursday at 2:00 p.m. UNCW takes the
field again on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. against College of
Charleston.
