CHARLESTON, S.C. - Brantley Meier recorded two hits in the
Charleston Southern baseball team's 10-8, 13-inning loss to High
Point University Friday evening at CSU Ballpark to break the school
record for hits in a single season.
The leadoff hitter now has 82 on the season, breaking the tie he
had with Justin Fyle (2004-07) coming into the contest. Meier
finished 2-for-5 and also drove home a run.
Both teams notched 13 hits and three errors, but a two-run home
run from Kyle Mahoney in the top of the 13th proved to be the
difference as the Panthers (28-27, 14-12 Big South) were able to
win the war of attrition.
CSU (17-37, 6-19 Big South) left 16 runners on base in the
contest, which included eight between the eighth and 12th
innings.
The loss for the Buccaneers wasted an amazing start to the game
from starting pitcher Tyler Thornburg. He allowed two unearned runs
in the first frame but was nearly untouchable in his final six
innings of work.
He gave up just five hits and two runs in seven innings, and he
left with a 7-2 lead. The bullpen was unable to record the final
six outs as HPU tied the game with four runs in the eighth and one
in the ninth. The road team was then able to win the game in the
13th, while CSU stranded multiple base runners in both the 10th and
11th innings.
High Point took the early lead in the first as Steve Antolik was
able to drive home Mike Mercurio and Nate Roberts after the duo
reached base on an error and a walk, respectively.
Thornburg retired the final batter of the frame, and CSU took
all the momentum away from High Point.
Tom Burkett singled with one out to get things going in the home
half of the first, and he was later driven home by Walt
Quattlebaum.
Charleston Southern took a 3-2 lead in the second as the bottom
half of the order contributed in a big way.
Matt Still led off the frame with a nine-pitch walk, and Derek
Smith followed with a single to put two aboard with no outs. They
both moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Jaren
Sustar. Drew Woodall grounded out to plate Still, and Smith scored
on the record-breaking single from Meier.
The home team tacked on another in the third as Quattlebaum
singled and scored on an RBI single from Smith. CSU added one more
insurance run in the fifth on the first-collegiate home run of
Harrison Wilkins' career.
Thornburg kept firing bullets on the mound, and Still and Smith
helped his cause as they recorded back-to-back solo homers in the
seventh to give the Buccaneers what appeared to be an
insurmountable 7-2 advantage. Still's blast gave him seven on the
year, and Smith moved into a tie for first on the team with his
eighth round-tripper.
Stew Brase relieved Thornburg in the eighth, and he went on to
give up four runs capped off by a three-run home run from Antolik.
Charlie McCready recorded the final two outs to end the inning, but
CSU was unable to add any insurance in the home half of the
eighth.
Zach Tessier pinch hit for High Point in the ninth, and he tied
the game at 7-7 with his second homer of the season.
The Bucs left Sustar stranded at second in the ninth, and the
two teams went to extras to settle things.
McCready sat down HPU in order in the top of the 10th, and Meier
and Burkett each reached base to start the bottom of the
inning.
Nick Chinners flew out to right field to move Meier to third
base with just one out, and Burkett stole second to take away any
chances of a double play. CSU was unable to take advantage of the
golden opportunity, however, as Quattlebaum struck out and Wilkins
grounded out to end the frame.
McCready started a crucial double play to end the 11th. He
caught a line drive that was headed straight for his head, and he
doubled up Mahoney who was caught off-guard at second base.
Bentley Christmas singled to start the Buc half of the 11th, and
he proceeded to steal second. He advanced to third on a single from
Sustar, but that was where he would stay as Meier flew out to left
field to end the inning.
The two teams exchanged runs in the 12th, and High Point won the
game with Mahoney's homer in the 13th. The Buccaneers were sat down
in order in the final frame.
Smith led the way for CSU with his 3-for-7 effort. He also
scored twice and drove home two runs. Meier and Quattlebaum each
recorded two hits, Wilkins drove home two and Burkett and Still
both scored twice to lead Charleston Southern.
Brase was only able to record one out in his relief effort. He
gave up four runs (three earned) on just two hits. McCready threw
the next 4 1/3 innings and gave up just two runs on five hits.
Tyler Vick (0-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season
after giving up the two-run home run to Mahoney in the 13th. He
officially recorded one out and gave up two runs on one hit. Corey
Deighan recorded the final three outs.
Mahoney finished the day 3-for-6, and Antolik led HPU with five
runs batted in. Mercurio scored three times and Roberts scored
twice.
Jaime Schultz started for High Point and allowed five runs on
seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. Spencer Andrews recorded two outs
without being harmed, and Brian Jones gave up two runs on two hits
in one inning of work.
Corey Swickle and Drew Dades combined to throw four shutout
innings, while only allowing four hits. Mikel Rodenberg gave up one
run and no hits, but could not record an out, and Kyle Wigmore
(1-0) earned the win following a perfect final two innings of
relief on the mound.
The last time CSU played a 13-inning game was a 7-6 loss to
Auburn on March 17, 2009.
The two teams will battle in the season finale at 2 p.m. May 22
at CSU Ballpark. Charleston Southern will be honoring seniors
Andrew White and Scotty Radabaugh prior to the contest, and White
will take the mound one last time as a Buccaneer.
