CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Buccaneers of Charleston Southern lost to
the Bulldogs of UNC Asheville at a score of 9-2. The Buccaneers
lost in spite of a good outing from starting pitcher Stew Brase who
went 7.2 innings giving up only two earned runs. However, his
counterpart Ryan Dull trumped his performance. Dull threw a
complete game for the Bulldogs and allowed only five hits. The loss
drops the Bucs' record to 15-13 (3-4, BSC) and improves UNCA to
10-15 (4-3).
Both pitchers were pitching well in the early going; neither
allowing a run until the third inning this afternoon.
UNCA would break the deadlock in the top of the third when a man
scored from third base on a passed ball.
The Buccaneers would respond with a run of their own in the
bottom of that inning when a sacrifice fly from Alex Tomasovich
would score Blake Hunt from third base making the score 1-1.
The Bulldogs would again cross home plate in the fifth giving
them the narrow 2-1 lead.
CSU would respond yet again in the sixth when Walt Quattlebaum
stepped to the plate and hit line drive off the left field wall for
a double, scoring Derek Smith from second base. That run brought
the game back to level terms at 2-2.
The score remained tied at 2-2 going into the top of the eighth
inning. Today's game seemed to turn on a single contentious call by
the plate home umpire. The umpire ruled a passed ball on a pitch
that initially appeared to be tipped to the backstop, allowing the
runner to score from third. The questionable call was contended by
Charleston Southern head coach Stuart Lake to no avail.
UNC Asheville would subsequently plate four runs that inning,
giving them a 6-3 advantage.
The Bulldogs would add three more runs in the ninth to further
bolster their lead to 9-2.
Charleston Southern could not muster enough hits in the late
innings to mount a rally.
The second game of the Buccaneers' second Big South home series
is slated for tomorrow at 2 p.m. at CSU Ballpark.
