Bucs Fall to Eagles 3-2 in Extra Innings

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Pitcher Stew Brase threw a complete game and gave up just one earned run, but his outstanding effort wasn't enough as the CSU Buccaneers came up a run short against Winthrop and fell to the Eagles by a score of 3-2 in extra innings at Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill, S.C., on Friday evening.

Both teams entered the contest on four-game losing streaks; unfortunately it was Winthrop's that came to an end. The Bucs (20-22, 7-9) will face the Eagles (19-20, 9-7) in a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. in Rock Hill.

Brantley Meier went 2-for-4 with a run, while Tom Burkett continued his hot streak by going 2-for-5. Burkett also crossed home plate once and had four stolen bases. Jaren Sustar and Alex Tomasovich each had an extra base hit with Sustar recording the lone RBI of the day.

Brase's lone earned run turned out to be the game winner, as he struck out two and walked four while giving up four hits 9.2 innings.

Brett Thomas went 1-for-3 with a run for the Eagles. TJ Olesczuk was 1-for-2 on the day, and scored the game winner in the bottom of the tenth. Tyler Mizenko and Mitchell Knox each gave up five hits in 5.0 innings, though it was Mizenko who surrendered the two runs and struck out five.

Burkett started off the game with a single to left field. He then stole both second and third before scoring on a wild pitch to put the Bucs up 1-0 in the top of the first inning.

However the Eagles tied things up then took control of the game an inning later. Thomas doubled to right center, and then scored when Tyler Cook walked with the bases loaded to tie things up at 1-1. Max Vogel then gave the Eagles the 2-1 lead when he was able to score as Cook was attempting to steal second in the bottom of the second.

Meier singled to right field in the top of the fifth, advancing to second when Burkett grounded out to second. Meier then stole third before crossing home plate when Sustar doubled down the left field line to tie things up again at 2-2.

Both Derek Smith and Nick Chinners got on base in the top of the tenth, but neither one could make to home. In the bottom of the inning, Olesczuk singled to the shortstop and was driven home soon after on a single by Cam Walters to give the Eagles the 3-2 win.
