CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Buccaneers of Charleston Southern won
their fourth consecutive Big South Conference game today with a
victory over Presbyterian College at a score of 18-9. The 18 runs
scored by CSU were the most they have plated this season. The win
improves the Bucs' record to 26-24 (13-9, BSC). The 13 conference
wins are the most in program history since 2002. Leading Charleston
Southern's offensive onslaught was sophomore third baseman Jaren
Sustar. Sustar had a career high five hits on the day and had an
RBI. Senior left fielder Matt Still also had a banner day only
being a homer short of hitting for the cycle. Still went 3-for-4 on
the day and had four RBI.
The Blue Hose of Presbyterian College would jump out to a four
run lead in the top of the first inning, three of which came with
two outs already recorded.
Charleston Southern would respond in the bottom of the first
with five runs of their own. The Buccaneers had five consecutive
singles in that inning. Still would step up to bat with the bases
loaded and hit a bases clearing triple by going the other way into
the right field corner.
After a tough first inning CSU starting pitcher Stew Brase
showed resolve by battling back and throwing three scoreless
innings in his next five. He pitched a total of six innings for
Charleston Southern and gets his fifth win of the season. Brase got
some help from his defense, turning grounders into double plays on
two separate occasions.
It was evident that the Buccaneers were making a concerted
effort throughout the game to make contact and put the ball in play
when up to bat. The Bucs only strikeout came in the bottom of the
eighth inning, from a batter who was only a home run short of the
cycle. CSU also went 9-for-22 as a team with runners in scoring
position. Six different Buccaneers had multiple hits in today's
contest.
A six run inning from CSU in the bottom of the eighth inning
that included a two-RBI double down the left field line from senior
second baseman Brandon McKinney put the game out of reach for the
Blue Hose of Presbyterian.
Charleston Southern will continue their final home series of the
season tomorrow with the second leg against Presbyterian. First
pitch is scheduled for tomorrow at 2 p.m.
CSU will honor their eleven seniors in the final home series of
their careers at Charleston Southern prior to Saturday's
contest.
