CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Buccaneers of Charleston Southern fell to
the Blue Hose of Presbyterian at a score of 5-4, after holding a
one run lead going into the ninth inning. The loss drops the Bucs'
overall record to 27-25 (14-10 BSC). They remain in third place in
the Big South Conference standings. Both starting pitchers in
today's contest had good outings. Jesse Cadenhead went 8.1 innings
for the Buccaneers and Steven Richardson pitched a complete game
for the Blue Hose.
Today's game stood in stark contrast to the first two games of
this series. There were a total of 12 scoreless half-innings in
today's game alone, after only 12 over the first two games.
Despite taking the loss Charleston Southern's senior
right-hander Jesse Cadenhead had a good outing. Cadenhead went 8.1
innings, six of which were scoreless. He allowed only two earned
runs and struck out eight batters.
Sophomore Jaren Sustar continued his good hitting as of late, as
well as having several outstanding defensive plays at third base.
Sustar went 3-for-4 today and is 13-for-18 in the Buccaneers last
four contests.
Charleston Southern would allow a run in the first inning and
for the first time this series failed to record a run in the bottom
of the first.
However, the Bucs' would get out in front of the Blue Hose in
the bottom of the second. In that inning Charleston Southern would
string together four consecutive singles. Freshman catcher Drew
Woodall singled to bring in Brandon McKinney. Brantley Meier would
follow that up with a two RBI single to left field making the score
3-1.
Neither team would score again until the fifth inning when
Presbyterian would plate two runs tying the score at 3-3.
The Bucs would again take the lead in the bottom of the sixth
when a ground out from Derek Smith would bring in Jaren Sustar from
third.
The Presbyterian Blue Hose took back the lead with two runs in
the top of the ninth due in large part to defensive miscues by the
Bucs.
In the bottom of the ninth Charleston Southern was threatening
with two men on with two outs but were unable to bring in a run and
extend the game.
Charleston Southern will return to action on Tuesday of this
week for the final home game of the season against Georgia
Southern, and will finish out Big South play against Coastal
Carolina next weekend. First-pitch for Tuesday's game is slated for
2 p.m.
