Bucs & Eagles
The Buccaneers will face in state rival Winthrop for the
70th time in program history as part of the 2011 Big South
Championship. The Eagles have the series lead at 47-22, but it was
the Buccaneers who claimed the 2011 regular season series two games
to one. Though the Eagles struck first with a 3-2 win in extra
innings on April 22nd, the Buccaneers bounced back to win both
games of April 23rd's doubleheader. Walt Quattlebaum and Matt
Still led the Bucs to a 7-6 win in the first game before Jesse
Cadenhead struck out nine batters to give CSU its second win of the
day by a score of 7-3. The two teams last met in postseason play
in 2002 when the Bucs finished in third place of the BSC. The
Eagles defeated the Bucs 4-1 in that meeting.
Lucky Number Three
The Bucs, who return to postseason play after missing the
tournament in 2010, are in the midst of one of the best seasons in
recent program history. CSU claims its highest Big South finish
since 2002, when the team also finished third with a 12-9 BSC
record under then-head coach Gary Murphy. It is also the
Buccaneers' first 28-win season since 2000, when Murphy piloted CSU
to a 31-31-1 overall record and a second-place Big South finish
(14-7).
Bucs Upset No. 26 Coastal Carolina
The Buccaneers pulled one of their biggest upsets of the
season on May 20, defeating nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina by a
score of 4-3. Not only is it CSU's first win over a ranked team
this season, the victory marks the first time since 2006 the Bucs
have downed the Big South's top-ranked Chanticleers. A solid,
seven strikeout outing by Jesse Cadenhead, as well as two runs from
Brantley Meier propelled the Bucs to the win.
Jack of All Trades
Redshirt junior Walt Quattlebaum is one of CSU's most
versatile players, a fact that was apparent in the Bucs' series at
Coastal Carolina. Quattlebaum started the series off playing first
base in place of Nick Chinners. He got the start at second base in
Saturday's 4-3 win over the Chanticleers before moving shortstop
for Sunday's match up. Though he has not seen action on the mound
this season, Quattlebaum is also listed as a right-handed pitcher
for the Bucs.
Bring 'Em Home
Senior designated hitter Derek Smith has led the Bucs in
RBI for most of the season, so it's no surprise that his bat played
a large part in Saturday's win over Coastal Carolina. Despite just
having one hit, Smith was took credit for driving home three of
CSU's four runs, including the game-winner in the top of the ninth
inning. After CCU misplayed a foul ball, Smith got another chance
at the play and grounded out, allowing Brantley Meier the chance to
score the game winning run.
