CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern (5-10) pounded out 10
hits, including a Walt Quattlebaum grand slam, as the Bucs surged
past Rider (4-7) 12-7 on Saturday afternoon.
Rider struck first in the ball game, however, to take a lead in
the top of the first. Brandon Cotten led off with a single to right
field and then stole his fifth base of the season before taking
third on an errant throw from CSU catcher Drew Woodall. Cotten
would cross home plate when Ian Lindsay laid a perfect bunt down
the third base line on a safety squeeze.
The Bucs, however, did not waste anytime in responding to the
Rider offense. Bobby Ison set the tone for CSU as he laced a line
drive single to left-center field and took second when Cotten
attempted to throw behind him at first base from the outfield. Alex
Tomasovich then walked and both runners moved up 90 feet on a Jaren
Sustar bunt single that loaded the bases. Chase Shelton drew the
first RBI of the afternoon for Charleston Southern as he took a 3-1
fastball for ball four. The big blow of the inning then came from
senior Walt Quattlebaum, who took the first pitch he saw over the
left field wall for a grand slam and his first home run of the
season.
Quattlebaum added to his RBI total in the third when he plated
Sustar on a sacrifice fly to extend the Buccaneer lead to 6-1.
Sustar reached to start the inning on a walk and moved to third
when Shelton singled to right.
CSU would put up another five-spot in the fifth. Tomasovich was
hit-by-a-pitch to lead off the frame and moved to third when
Shelton doubled to the right field corner. They both moved up on a
wild pitch, and Shelton scored on Quattlebaum's RBI single for his
sixth RBI of the afternoon that gave the Bucs an 8-1 lead. After a
Brian Welch single and a Nick Berry fielder's choice, Robbie
Streett decided to join the home run party as he lifted a Kyle
Kennett pitch deep and over the wall in left field for his first
long ball of the year and an 11-1 CSU lead.
The Charleston Southern scoring would be capped in the sixth via
a Shelton sacrifice fly that drove in Ison.
Zach Hagaman (1-0) got the win in relief for CSU. Hagaman tossed
3 1/3 scoreless innings while striking out two. Pat Dolan gave up
four runs (three ER) in a no-decision for the Bucs. Dolan allowed
five hits and fanned four while issuing three walks in his fourth
start of the year.
Denis Buckley and Shelton each pitched a scoreless frame for CSU
in the victory.
Rider's Patrick Devlin (1-2) was the losing pitcher on the
day.
In addition to Quattlebaum's two hits and six RBI, Shelton went
2-for-2 with 2 RBI on the afternoon and Streett added 2 RBI as
well.
The Bucs and Broncs meet in the series finale on Sunday
afternoon at CSU Ballpark. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
