CHARLESTON, S.C. - Bouncing back from a tough 4-3 loss in game
one, the Charleston Southern baseball team (6-14) was able to
bounce back with an 8-5 win in the second game of the day against
the Quakers off Penn on Saturday afternoon at CSU Ballpark in
Charleston.
Ryan Gunther got the start in the game one, going 7.2 innings
and giving up four runs off 10 hits with five strikeouts. Zach
Hagaman pitched just over an inning in relief, also recording a
strikeout.
Harrison Wilkins went 2-for-3 with a run in the first game,
while Alex Tomasovich was 3-for-4 as the Bucs collected 10 hits
from the Quakers. Bobby Ison's was 1-for-2 with two of the Bucs'
three runs.
Penn got on the board early, as Greg Zebrack homered to left
center in the second at bat of the game as the Quakers took a 1-0
lead. They added two more in the top of the sixth, with Matt
McKinnnon and Derek Vigoa scoring on single to left field by Austin
Bossart to give Penn the 3-0 lead.
The Bucs battled back in the bottom of the inning. Bobby Ison
was hit by a pitch to take first and made it two third on a single
by Jaren Sustar. Chase Shelton then hit into a double play,
allowing Ison to make it home and put the Bucs on the board down
3-1 after six.
Rick Brebner added another homer in the top of the eighth put
the Quakers in front 4-1.
Attempting to rally in the bottom of the inning, as a trio of
singles loaded the bases. Drew Woodall singled to right center,
followed by Wilkins' infield hit as well as an Ison bunt. Jaren
Sustar reached on a fielders' choice that took Woodall out at home,
but kept the bases loaded. Chase Shelton singled up the middle
but an error by the Penn center fielder sent him to third and put
Ison and Wilkins home to bring the Bucs within one down 4-3.
However, Alex Tomasovich hit into a double play to end the inning
and cut the comeback short.
Vince Voiro (2-1) picked up the win for the Quakers, giving up
three runs off of ten hits while striking out six batters in 7.1
innings. Cody Thomson got the save, holding the Bucs without a hit
across the final 1.2 innings.
In game two of the series, it was once again Penn that got off
to a fast start with Zebrack scoring on a single by Ryan Dietrich
to put the Quakers up 1-0 in the top of the first. They would
add another in the top of the second, as Vigoa took first after
being hit by a pitch. He then crossed home plate when Kyle Toomey
grounded out to the shortstop to make it 2-0.
A three-run outburst in the bottom of the second pushed the Bucs
ahead. Sustar reached first on a bunt was driven to third on a
single to right center by Denis Buckley. Blake Hunt walked to
load the bases and was followed by John Faircloth to bring Sustar
home for the Bucs' first run of the game. Wilkins was hit but a
pitch, sending Buckley home. Hunt was able to score on the next
play when Ison reached on a fielders' choice to give the Buccaneers
the 3-2 lead.
Hunt drove Buckley home with an RBI single and inning later as
Charleston Southern took a 4-2 lead after three innings.
Another three-run inning made the Bucs' lead more comfortable.
Walks by Hunt and Wilkins sandwiched a sac bunt by Faircloth. A
triple by Ison sent both home, before Ison himself crossed home
plate on a single by Tomasovich to put the Bucs up 7-2 after six
innings.
The Quakers struck back with two runs of their own in the top of
the seventh on a homer by McKinnon that drove home Vigoa as well to
bring Penn within three at 7-4.
Wilkins and Ison both singled in the bottom of the eighth,
before Shelton was intentionally walked to join them in loading the
bases. A sac fly by Sustar, who went 4-for-3 on the day, brought
home Wilkins to add another run and put the score at 8-4 in favor
of the Bucs.
This time it was the Quakers' turn to attempt the comeback in
the final inning, as back-to-back singles put Brebner and Vigoa on
base. A sac fly by Kyle Toomey scored Brebner, but closer Corey
Deighan was able to work his way out of the jam and help the Bucs
to the 8-5 win.
Deighan picked up his first save of the season, while starter
Patrick Dolan moved to 2-1 with the win. He went 6.2 innings,
giving up four runs off of four hits with four strikeouts and two
walks. Hagaman pitched just over an inning in relief, giving up on
unearned run and recording a strikeout.
Wilkins led the CSU offense, going 3-for-3 with two runs and an
RBI. Ison was 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI, while Buckley also
collected two hits and two runs.
Matt Gotschall took the loss for Penn, giving up five runs on
eight hits through five innings.
The Bucs and the Quakers will meet again on Sunday in the series
finale in a 1 p.m. game at CSU Ballpark.
