CHARLESTON, S.C. - In his first action in two weeks, CSU
left-hander Charlie McCready gave up just one earned run in five
innings to help the Charleston Southern Buccaneers (7-14) to a 5-1
win over Penn in a weather-shortened contest at CSU Ballpark on
Sunday afternoon. The Bucs take the series two games to one.
McCready, who was injured in a start against Auburn two weekends
ago, evened his record at 2-2 by allowing five hits and recording
three strikeouts.
Freshman centerfielder Bobby Ison had another solid day at the
plate, going 2-for-2 with a run and a career-high three RBI.
Junior shortstop Alex Tomasovich also collected a hit and two RBI
as the Bucs tallied six safeties on the day.
John Beasley (0-1) took the loss for the Quakers, going just
over an inning and giving up two earned runs and five walks. Cody
Thomson saw the bulk of the action for Penn, giving up three runs
and five hits in 2.2 innings.
Ison drove home two runs in the bottom of the second to give the
Bucs a 2-0 lead. The single to right center came after Denis
Buckley walked, Drew Woodall was hit by a pitch, and John Faircloth
drawing the walk.
Penn's Greg Zebrack double down the left field line to start the
top of the fourth and was driven home by Rick Brebner to put the
Quakers on the board.
Zach Hagaman doubled for CSU in the bottom of the fourth. After
Faircloth walked, Ison's single to center scored Hagaman.
Tomasovich followed with a two-run double for a 5-1 lead.
The Quakers scored three more times in the top of the sixth
inning, but inclement weather forced a cancellation midway through
the top of the inning. As a result, the official stats revert back
to the conclusion of the fifth inning.
The Bucs will split the midweek action between their cross-town
rivals, heading to Joe Riley Park on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. match up
with the Citadel. They will host the College of Charleston at CSU
Ballpark at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
