CHARLESTON, S.C. - A four-run inning gave The Citadel Bulldogs a
late 4-0 lead that Charleston Southern couldn't work its way back
from as the Buccaneers (7-15) took the loss to their cross-town
foes on Tuesday evening at Riley Park in Charleston.
Bobby Ison (1-for-3) pushed his hitting streak to eight-games,
collecting one of just three CSU hits off of the Bulldogs' pitching
staff. Walt Quattlebaum (1-for-1) and Denis Buckley (1-for-1) each
recorded a late hit as pinch-hitters.
Kevin Buran (0-3) took the loss for the Bucs, giving up two runs
on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Zach Hagaman threw
just under an inning in relief, giving up two runs on two hits
before being replaced by Brennan Dorsett in the bottom of the
eighth.
The Bulldogs put up four runs in the bottom of the seventh to
take a late lead. Bo Thompson singled through the right side to
start things off and advanced on a sac bunt. Hughston Armstrong
drove him home to break the tie and put The Citadel up 1-0.
Mason Davis then slammed a triple down the right field line to
drive home Armstrong and Calvin Orth before Davis scored on a wild
pitch to give the Bulldogs the 4-0 advantage.
The Bucs had the opportunity to make a comeback in the top of
the eighth, as Citadel pitcher TJ Clarkson hit Blake Hunt before
walking both Harrison Wilkins and Ison to load the bases.
Clarkson was able to work his way out of the jam as Alex Tomasovich
flied out to left field to end the inning.
Another opportunity arose in the top of the ninth, as pinch
hitters Buckley and Quattlebaum had back to back singles with
singles. However, Drew Woodall would strike out swinging to end
the game as the Bucs took the 4-0 loss.
Four Bulldog pitchers combined to hold the Bucs without a run,
with Clarkson (1-1) picking up the win by going two innings with a
strikeout and two walks. Brett Tompkins got the start, going four
innings without giving up a hit before being replaced by James
Reeves.
The Buccaneers will continue with the cross-town rivalries,
hosting the College of Charleston in a 3 p.m. match up at CSU
Ballpark on Wednesday. The game will be sponsored Qdoba.
