CHARLESTON, S.C. - A rocky third inning spelled trouble for the
CSU baseball team, as the UNC Wilmington Seahawks would put up six
runs en route to a 10-4 victory over the Buccaneers on Wednesday
afternoon at CSU Ballpark.
The Buccaneers started off quickly, picking up a run in the
bottom of the first. Bobby Ison singled to third base, advancing
on a sacrifice bunt. Alex Tomasovich singled to center field to
drive Ison home and put the Bucs up 1-0 early on.
However the CSU lead was short lived, as a six-run outburst by
the Seahawks in the top of the third inning put them ahead 6-1.
Michael Bass singled to left field to start things off before Matt
Campbell doubled down the leftfield line to drive Bass home.
Andrew Cain followed that up with a double as well, scoring
Campbell to put UNCW ahead 2-1. Hunter Ridge and Thomas Pope had
back-to-back singles, with Cain crossing home plate on Ridge's hit
to right center. Austin Weekley walked Drew Farber and was then
replaced by Denis Buckley. Ridge would then score on a sacrifice
fly by Jake Keonig before Corey Dick hit a two RBI single to score
Farber and Pope as UNCW took a 6-1 lead.
The Bucs attempted to work their way back in the bottom of the
fourth. Chase Shelton singled to right field before Walt
Quattlebaum and Brian Welch drew back-to-back walks. Drew Woodall
was hit by a pitch, scoring Shelton. Harrison Wilkins reached on
fielder's choice before Ison walked with the bases loaded, scoring
Welch as the Bucs cut the deficit to four at 6-2 after four
innings.
The Seahawks returned the favor in the top of the fifth, taking
back two runs. Pope walked to start the inning off, and then stole
second. Farber doubled down the left field line to score Pope.
Farber then made it home on a Bass single to put the Seahawks back
up by five at 8-3.
Welch singled up the middle in the bottom of the sixth, stealing
second soon after. Wilkins singled through the right side to score
Welch as the Bucs would add another run to trail UNCW 8-4.
Cain had a ground-rule double in the top of the ninth for the
Seahawks, advancing Molinaro who took first after being hit by a
pitch. Ridge drew a walk before Pope reached on a fielder's
choice. Cain advanced to second on the fielder's choice, scoring
on an error by Tomasovich. Molinaro would also score on the error
as the Seahawks took the 10-4 win.
Weekley took the loss on the mound for CSU. He gave up six runs
on six hits in 2 1/3 innings. He also struck out two and issued two
walks.
The win went to Seahawk reliever Christian MacDonald as he
allowed one run in 2 1/3 innings of work. He gave up three hits and
fanned two batters in the process.
The Bucs were paced offensively by their lead-off man, Ison, who
went 2-for-4 on the day with a walk. Ison also drove in one run and
scored a run for the CSU offense.
