CLINTON, S.C. - Bud Jeter (3-6) went seven strong innings and
Gabe Grammer picked up his seventh save of the season as
Presbyterian (17-21, 5-8) held off Charleston Southern (15-26,
6-7), 2-1, on Friday afternoon at PC Baseball Complex.
Jeter allowed just one run (earned) on four hits in his start
for PC. CSU starter Ryan Gunther (0-7) matched him with a quality
start of his own that went seven innings, giving up seven hits and
two runs (both earned). Gunther struck out two and did not issue a
walk.
CSU freshman Robbie Streett had two of CSU's four safeties on
the day, extending his hitting streak to nine games.
Presbyterian went up, 1-0, on Kenny Bryant's eighth homerun of
the season to lead off the bottom of the second inning.
Both starting pitchers would put up zeroes until the Bucs struck
in the fifth. Chase Shelton led off the inning with a single down
the line in right field and stole second. Walt Quattlebaum's double
inside the bag at third scored Shelton with the tying run.
The tie would be broken in the bottom of the sixth, which
started with back-to-back singles from Billy Motroni and Brad
Zebedis, putting runners on first and third with no outs. Gunther
then coaxed Bryant into a 6-4-3 double play but it was enough to
score Motroni from third, giving the Blue Hose the eventual winning
run.
Denis Buckley threw a perfect eighth inning of relief for
CSU.
Reliever Chad Sanders retired the three batters he faced in the
eighth for Presbyterian, and Grammar retired the side in order in
the ninth.
The two teams will square off in game two of the series on
Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at PC Baseball Complex.
