CLINTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern (16-26, 7-7) scored all
seven of their runs in just two innings but that would be enough
for the Bucs to come away with a 7-4 Big South victory over
Presbyterian (17-22, 5-9) on Saturday afternoon at PC Baseball
Complex.
With the game tied at 4-4 in the tenth, CSU sophomore Alex
Tomasovich would lead the offense in the right direction with a
double into the left field corner to start the inning off PC
reliever Michael Ricchi. Ricchi would then hit Chase Shelton to
make it first and second with no outs before giving way to Chad
White. Walt Quattlebaum would execute a perfect sacrifice bunt up
the first base line that moved the runners up 90 feet and forced an
intentional walk of Robbie Streett to load the bases. Both coaches
would then use go to their bench as the Bucs brought on pinch
hitter Brian Welch and the Blue Hose countered with reliever Chad
Sanders. Welch would get hit by a pitch to break the tie, scoring
Tomasovich. After Sanders induced a flyout for the second out,
Buccaneer leadoff man Bobby Ison drew a bases loaded walk that
extended the lead to 6-4. Presbyterian would again go to the
bullpen, this time calling on Tim Corbin, but he would issue
another bases loaded walk to Harrison Wilkins, giving CSU a 7-4
cushion.
Denis Buckley would come on for his first save of the year,
issuing just one walk and striking out one while working the tenth
inning.
Corey Deighan (3-2) was the winner in relief for the Bucs. He
went 2 1/3 innings, giving up one run (earned) on four hits while
striking out one and issuing one walk.
The loss would be saddled to Ricchi, who threw 1 2/3 innings
while giving up two runs (both earned) on one hit.
Presbyterian took the lead 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, when
Billy Motroni singled with one out and would move to third on an
errant pickoff throw from CSU starter Charlie McCready. Brad
Zebedis followed with a single into left field to score
Motroni.
The Blue Hose struck again in the sixth, this time on a Jay
Lizanich RBI single to right field that scored Gabe Grammer, who
doubled earlier in the inning.
An infield single and RBI would be credited to Grammer in the
bottom half of the seventh, scoring Kenny Bryant to make it 3-0.
Bryant doubled earlier in the inning to reach base, one of two
doubles on the day for him.
The Buccaneers would fight back with a four run rally in the
eighth. Back-to-back singles from Ison and Wilkins would end the
day for Blue Hose starter Chandler Knox, who gave way to Buck
Mostellar. Knox would get a flyout for out number one, but then
issued a walk to Tomasovich that loaded the bases and brought up
Chase Shelton. Shelton lined a single into left center field,
scoring Ison and Wilkins and bringing the Bucs to within 3-2.
Quattlebaum would follow with a double that scored Tomasovich to
tie the game 3-3 and end Mostellar's afternoon. Ricchi came on to
allow a sacrifice fly off the bat of Streett to break the tie as
Shelton crossed home plate and gave CSU a 4-3 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, trailing 4-3, PC answered as Grammer
came thru with a one out single that tied the game, sending it into
extra frames.
McCready went 6 1/3 for the Bucs in getting the start. The
left-hander allowed three runs (two earned) on 12 hits and struck
out four.
Knox tossed seven innings for PC allowing two runs (both earned)
on six hits. He walked two and struck out five.
The Blue Hose offensive attack was led by Motroni, Zebedis,
Bryant and Grammer, who all had three hits each.
Streett and Shelton both collected two hits each to pace
Charleston Southern at the plate. Shelton also had two RBI. Streett
extended his hitting streak to 10 games in the ball game, the
second longest hitting streak this season for CSU.
The Bucs and Blue Hose will tangle tomorrow in game three of the
series. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the PC Baseball
Complex.
