ROCK HILL, S.C. - CSU starter Tory Schroff won his
third-straight Big South start and Chase Shelton went 2-for-4 with
three RBIs to carry the Bucs to a 6-3 win in the opener of a
doubleheader at Winthrop University on Saturday. Winthrop won game
two, 3-1.
The Bucs move to 18-27 overall and 8-10 in Big South play, while
Winthrop is now 17-31 and 5-13.
Game 1 - Charleston Southern 6, Winthrop 3 - Box Score
Charleston Southern jumped to an early lead and Schroff limited
Winthrop for eight innings as CSU took the opener. The Bucs built a
6-1 lead through five innings and Schroff was rock-solid,
scattering six hits - all singles - to improve to 6-2 on the
year.
Schroff's six wins are tied for third-most in the Big South.
The Bucs' offense, led by Shelton and two hits from Brian Welch,
gave Schroff plenty of room with which to work. Shelton ripped a
two-run single in the top of the first to give the Bucs a 2-0 lead
out of the gate. CSU never trailed in the win.
Shelton added his third RBI in the top of the fifth as the Bucs
extended their lead.
CSU's Zach Hagaman reached on a one-out single and Drew Woodall
followed with his first hit of the day to give the Bucs a pair of
runners. Shelton and first baseman Robbie Streett put together
back-to-back RBI singles to break the game open. Welch added an RBI
in the inning as CSU moved ahead 6-1.
Reliever Austin Weekley came in to work the ninth, picking up
his seventh save of the season.
The Bucs outhit Winthrop, 9-7, and neither team scored over the
final three innings.
Game 2 - Winthrop 3, Charleston Southern 1 - Box Score
Winthrop starter Sam Kmiec (WP, 3-6) limited thee Buccaneers to
four hits in 7.2 innings of work and reliever Eric Ruth pitched out
of a jam in the ninth for his eighth save as the Eagles held off
the Bucs in game two, 3-1.
The Buccaneers put two runners on in the ninth in a two-run game
on one-out singles by Zach Hagaman and Drew Woodall, but Ruth was
able to induce a fly out from Shelton and a strike out to end the
game as Winthrop took the series.
The Bucs took a 1-0 in the second on a sacrifice fly by Shelton
to score Hagaman, who ripped a leadoff double to open the inning,
setting up CSU's early lead.
Winthrop manufactured three runs off of Bucs' starter Kevin
Buran (LP, 2-8), giving Kmiec enough offense for the win. An RBI
ground out by Kyle Edwards gave the Eagles the lead in the fourth.
He led Winthrop with two hits.
Hagaman was 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Buccaneers.
CSU returns home on Tuesday to host Savannah State. First pitch
is at 6 p.m. at CSU Ballpark. The Bucs host USC Upstate on
Wednesday at the same time at CSU Ballpark.
