Bucs drop series finale at Longwood in extra innings, 8-7

FARMVILLE, Va. –Mac McCafferty singled home C.J. Roth in the bottom of the 12th inning to give Longwood an 8-7 walk-off win over Charleston Southern on Sunday at Bolding Stadium.

The Lancers rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to improve to 11-10 overall and 2-1 in Big South play. CSU falls to 14-7 and 1-2 in league play.

Longwood scored the game's only extra-inning run on a pair of base hits in the 12th.

The Bucs scored twice in the ninth inning to tie the game at 7-7, but left five runners on base from the ninth-inning on. CSU had 15 hits in the game, led by a 3-for-5 day from catcher Sam Remick, but the Bucs left 14 runners on-base.

The Bucs jumped to a 4-0 lead through two innings. Andrew Widell's RBI single in the first scored Chase Shelton and Nick Berry in the top of the first as the Bucs hit Lancers' starter Allen Ellis hard early. Third baseman Alex Tomasovich added a two-run single in the second as CSU piled up three more hits to take the early lead.

Longwood answered with four runs in the bottom half of the second as Matt Dickason came through with a two-run double and Kyri Waskinton added an RBI groundout .

Remick tied the game at 5-5 in the fifth with an RBI single anfd that's the way things stayed until the eighth.

Longwood took a 7-5 lead in the eighth as Roth came through with an RBI single and McCafferty drew his second bases-loaded walk of the day to give the Lancers a late lead.

The Bucs got the two runs they needed in the ninth to force extra innings. Shelton drew a leadoff walk to set up a sacrifice fly from Matt Witt and a two-out, RBI single from Brian Welch to give CSU a chance in extra innings.

CSU threatened in the 11th as Cody Austin reached with a leadoff single and Remick drew a one-out walk, but a strikeout and a foul out ended the Bucs' threat before Longwood won it in the 12th.

Reliever Scott Burkett (WP, 2-0) worked the final three innings to pick up the win for Longwood.

CSU's Joe Pistacchio (LP, 1-1) took the loss for the Bucs.

CSU returns home on Tuesday to host College of Charleston at 6 p.m. at CSU Ballpark.
