Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel scored four runs in the first inning to build an early lead and hand Charleston Southern a 10-3 loss on Wednesday at Riley Park.
CSU falls to 15-12 overall, while The Citadel improves to 12-14.
The Bulldogs outhit the Buccaneers, 16-10. Left fielder Drew DeKerlegend was 4-for-5 and scored twice, while Bo Thompson hit his sixth home run of the season to carry the Citadel offense.
CSU third baseman Alex Tomasovich extended his 20-game hitting streak with three hits, including a solo home run in the seventh. He also had a single in the first and ninth innings to score all three Bucs runs. He finished 3-for-5.
The Citadel's Tyler Griffin had a two-run double in the bottom of the first as the Bulldogs rallied from an early deficit. The Bulldogs scored three times in the first and three in the third to take a 7-1 lead.
CSU struck first with a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly from Andrew Widell to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Third baseman Alex Tomasovich and first baseman Chase Shelton each singled in their first at-bat to put runners at the corners for Widell.
Junior Bobby Ison went 3-for-4 and Shelton added a 2-for-5 afternoon to carry the Bucs' offense.
Freshman Tyler Pickard (LP, 0-1) took the loss in his first carry start, while Kyle McDorman and Andrew Locklear both worked a scoreless inning.
The two teams combined to use 13 pitchers.
CSU returns to action this weekend against Coastal Carolina at Pelicans Park in Myrtle Beach. First pitch of the series opener on Friday is at 6 p.m.
